How to get plex to recognize multi part ova series (HAMA)

So I am tweaking out the last few matches on my collection of anime and there is one area where plex is hugely failing. Many OVA series (direct to video, separate releases) are bundled under one anidbid as far as the hama search agent is concerned. For instance lets take one ova series I was working on, Murder Princess. Murder Princess is 6 OVAs and each have a title, but in anidb all 6 of them are under the id 4860. However ANY attempt to match more then one file under that id leads plex to combine them thinking they are multiple versions of a single show.

Clicking on the OVA titles do lead to a page with unique IDs (like first ova is 65976) but these do nothing for the match process.

Trying the plex movie database recognizes the first ova as “birth” but no entries for the other shows, so no chance of separately matching them as different movies.

Any help here would be grateful.

HAMA uses anidb or tvdb metadata source and you need to choose one numbering, name the file appropriatly and map the serie/movie to the metadata source entry.

there is 6 episodes according anidb so you will have to name them ep 1 to 6 in a serie library with serie name “Murder Princess [anidb-4860]”

Did you create a MOVIE library [“Trying the plex movie database” what does that even mean? movie library? TheMovieDB metadata source/agent? ] for something AniDB consider a series of 6 episodes ???

You also didn’t indicate the filenames and foldernames but seem like you do not follow anidb numbering not tvdb so …

Murder Princess - Anime - AniDB

Murder princess is under the Movie library type, mainly because I find so many OVA’s that are regarded as movies and do not come up at all, even in anidb form, if I am using the series library type. I then play with the AGENT depending on who can get me the info I need. Could it be handled better as series I do not know. OVAs do not have seasons, are shown in theaters, packaged, and sold as individual videos hence I choose to list them in a movies library.

Plex has an AGENT called literally “The movie database”, can’t get any more specific then that. Does it work all the time? Nope…i toggle between that and Aniedb all the time.

I have used a number of episode name formats with the last attempt using the anidb codes I found for the individual titles (65976, 67324, 72297, ect). These can be used in the html command line to bring up the episodes but cannot be used in Hama to pull meta data from and match videos.

I’ll need to remember to take another stab at it, maybe I will bring it into my Anime series library and see if it gets detected as a tv series instead of an ova.

Here are the links for both

Notes:

  • Both AniDB and TVDB consider it a 6 part TV and TheTVDB do no keep metadata on movie franchises and sport and erotica. Yes it would handle better as a series
  • TheMovieDb do however keep Metadata on both movies AND series
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_video_animation states"OVA […] media (and sometimes as OAV, original animated video), are animated films and series made specially for release in home video formats without prior showings on television or in theatres, though the first part of an OVA series may be broadcast for promotional purposes".
  • HAMA can handle movie as series and you could even use "[tvdb-4860-s1e3] to map the individual (fake) movie folder to the same tvdb entry but you have to pick a side and AniDB is a pretty good one to pick and they say it’s a series so label the folder “Murder Princess [anidb-4860]” and eps numbered 1 to 6…

Ok so that sounds like my underlying issue. I’m fine with leaving some OVAs in the series library, in fact I would actually prefer it more so I could keep all anime in one library, but you just need to go where the metadata flow.

That is the point of ASS+HAMA.
if you put movies in a folder with the same name without the extension, it will put it as s01e01 and all metadata will work. Plex and my agent is the only tool to not require two separate libraries for movies and series, had to hack the way to make it work but works
