How to Get Plex to Use Images in Metadata of the Media Files

Hi Guys,

I have two questions:

1. Use Image Attached in Metadata of Media Files
All my media files are in MP4 format and each file has been correctly labelled and named accordingly together with an image. How do I get Plex to use the image in the metadata instead of showing a shot taken randomly from the content of the file.

  1. I have two folders in my TV Shows folder, one for the series ‘American Crime’ with 3 seasons and another folder for the series ‘American Crime Story’ with 2 seasons. Plex, incorrectly named the former as the latter and used its image whereas the latter is named as the season with no image. How do I correct this to make Plex read them correctly? Would it be possible to add to the TVDB in the event ‘American Crime’ is not in it?

Preparation:

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie (Legacy)
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata of the affected items.

If your movie library already uses the new “Plex Movie” agent, do this instead:
Edit your movie library
go to the ‘Advanced’ tab
clear the check mark out of “Prefer local metadata”

Then:

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB.
If there is something in parentheses, take that too.
If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show.
Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB.
No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide.
Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

Wow! Thank you @OttoKerner You rock!

Hey @OttoKerner is it OK to have subfolders as in:

TV Shows (folder)/American Crime (folder)/Season 1 (folder)/American Crime s01e5.mp4 (file)

This is precisely the required folder structure: Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support

The link is a 404 @OttoKerner but no worries. I’ve tried dashes, dots and spaces and even manual input with image uploads, but nothing works. Plex just insists that my American Crime TV series is American Crime Story. I give up, I’ll just have to make a mental note that they are not what they are displayed as. UPSET!!!

I’ve corrected the link.

@OttoKerner that’s the page I used as reference to name my files, yeah Plex did think any different. Still refused to accept that American Crime is American Crime and American Crime Story is American Crime Story. Thanks for your help nevertheless.

Fix Match (Under the dots at the Show Level - not episode or season).

If necessary use the TVDB ID# found in the upper right of the main Show Page at TVDB:

https://thetvdb.com/series/american-crime-story

289108 <—American Crime Story:

Fix Match/Search Options - erase everything and put the ID# in the title field. Success is usually what’s next.

Sometimes (more often these days) a kick in the pants is what is needed at TVDB. Alternately you can Fix Match/Search Options and change the agent to TMDB - sometimes - for better results on a show lookup. Sometimes. TMDB doesn’t list every show, or every show very well, but sometimes they do. Worth a look if you’re having trouble with a show.

Anyway - the moral of the story is: Not every lookup is an instant match. If your file names and structures are perfect the chances are good, but there’s still an occasional failure.

OMG, @JuiceWSA has anyone ever told you that you’re a genius? Fix Match totally worked for my case and I didn’t even need to delete anything!

You rock! Thank you very much!

Andrew

Mom did - all the time - but since her passing not so much…lol

Enjoy…

I think your Mom’s Ace!

@JuiceWSA & All,

This ticket was opened to seek help with the metadata of my video files, which @JuiceWSA & @OttoKerner both helped me to get it sorted.

However, I am now having a similar problem with my music files. I have performed the steps mentioned by @OttoKerner; move ‘Local Media Assets’ to the bottom of the list. What else do I need to do to get Plex to use the cover image attached to each of my music files because at the moment, Plex is super confused and is completely messed up with my music files. It has the artists wrong, and instead of showing the albums, it is displaying each and every song from the same album, and it goes on and on.

Any advice?

Regards,
Andrew

Are your music files tagged well?
If so you may want to move Local Media Assets to the top.

My embedded artwork is simply wonderful - with LMA left at the bottom - where it belongs.

Have no idea what’s wrong, but it’s not that. <—at my house.

Also at my house:
each image is stored in the Album with MP3Tag (See Below).
Plex Sanctioned Music Structure is closely adhered to.
Plex Matching is cut out of the operation completely - 100% Local - 0% Plex.
It just works. <—at my house.

It’s the same at my house other than LMA is above Personal. :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh, the wise Man said.

LMA left at the bottom

I’m not saying I am right. Just saying what is working for me.
