How to I set Subtitle Language as default?

I am constantly trying to change my subtitle language to Portuguese-Brazil by default. I have no idea how to do that.

How can I achieve this?

My PMS is in English. I want to have the default language set to Portuguese-Brazil
The current version I am using is 1.22.2.4282

This is the Subtitle Search field. It is currently in Portuguese.

This is the page that sets the language. It shows 2 entries for Portuguese-Brazil
(Português (Brasil) and Português Brasileiro) Why? This just makes things more complex.

Even after setting one of these languages, it goes back to Abkhazian when coming back to this page. Bug!?

Plex follows the ISO-639 which doesn’t define a code for Brazillian Portuguese. The same happens for Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.
Because of many Brazilian users complaining about Plex not recognizing the suffix .pt-br., they made a “gambiarra” where pt-br is now seen as Portugal Portuguese instead of Unknown.
So the trick is to go to your user profile and set it as below:

Hey, @CostaHT thanks for the answer.

So, you are saying that we have this workaround where we can display “Portugês” instead of Unknown when using Pt-Br. Got it. This looks like a workaround for the user interface when using manually downloaded subtitles.

But how this fixes the issue to have Pt-Br instead of Pt-Portugal while searching for subtitles?

How plex will know I want to have Pt-Br as the default language for this goal?

See, now the default language is Português (not Pt-Br)

This is the thing I want to have as the default language

Português and Português-Brazil are not the same languages. They kind of look the same but they are not. There is 7,482 km between Portugal and Brazil and more than 500 years of separation.

Do you know any other workaround that can work in this scenario?

Tbh I don’t use Plex to download my subtitles, but I believe you should set brazilian portuguese as subtitles search and just Portugues as Preferred Subtitles. This will trick Plex to download and select the correct language.

Yeah, that would be a nice thing. I was not able to find such settings. Do you have any idea where I can start looking for it?

It seems it’s not working with the new agent, but it worth giving it a try.

Settings > Agents > Plex Movie Legacy > Enable OpenSubtitles and click on the cog button and add Brazilian Portuguese.

I am not sure if this is the right thing. If it is not enabled it is not being used. If it is not being used, how it matters here?

I’ve done what you said but it seems not related to what I am talking about.

I am asking a different thing. There is this new “Search” item when selecting the subtitle. It is on the same list as other local subtitles. The default language on this Search is what I want to change.

Here is the Search I am talking about.

For that you would go to Settings > Account > Audio and Subtitle Settings > Preferred Subtitle Language, BUT it’s not working for Brazilian Portuguese :joy:.
You can select other languages, test them on your player and see that the option works for any other language, but pt-br.
As I told in my first answer, at this moment the only solution is to set that option to Portuguese, manually download your subtitles and put them right next to your video files.

This way, a movie with a folder structure like that:

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
├── Godzilla.vs.Kong.2021.1080p.WEBRip.x264-RARBG.eng.srt
├── Godzilla.vs.Kong.2021.1080p.WEBRip.x264-RARBG.mp4
└── Godzilla.vs.Kong.2021.1080p.WEBRip.x264-RARBG.pt-BR.srt

Will always be shown like that:

Ah, got it.

I tested here too. It shows “Portuguese (Brasil)” on the Settings page but as you said it is not working. It is displaying “English” on the Search list instead.

Well, where can we report this bug?

Hi guys,
I come to you, beaceause i have some trubles to conifg my profile to autoselect English audio and the French Full subtitle and not the Forced one, I think i allready try all configuration possible to do this, but without succes. Can some help me with this ?

Here you can find my actual config :

And Plex selection :

Plex always select the forced french subitle instead of full one, and i can’t figure out how to do this, thank you a lot guys.

Best Regards

Hi dude. Please, do not hijack the thread. Create a new one.
On this new thread, please, explain what is “French Full” too. I have not idea what is it.

By “full” he means the non-forced subtitles, the regular ones.

Here in this forum, but It’s been reported many times already, and nothing was done.
My suggestion, leave it as Portuguese and use Bazarr to download subtitles for you.

Oh god.

I am using plex for about 10 years now. I am a little bit tired of finding subtitles manually or by configuring robots actually.

This new subtitle search is awesome. I can install a subtitle from my couch. Anyone can! The only drawback is to have to change the language to the one that I always use because there is no way to do that.

however, having it in Portuguese is better than nothing since my choice is just one step after. But seriously, this is just a small bug for these wise guys. They should fix this!

I agree, but you have to consider that whatever you download will be available only in your profile and the other users will have to download their own sub.
Not very convenient if you share your server with family members.
I set my users’ profile to portuguese and they never asked why it’s not “brazilian portuguese”.

I see. I just a single account, it is just random/volatile media. And even if I had, this is fine. Anyone could find his own subtitles. I use plex mostly because I can have the media running on my computer in another room and because I can change subtitles size/color and position relative to the video with the TV remote while I am watching.
