How to keep 2 TV users separated

We have 2 LG televisions in our home, and both my wife and I are using the Plex app on a Roku Ultra. I am the only one who has a Plex signin. My wife does not.

Sometimes we are both watching a series from our Plex library. If we are watching the same series, and she is on a different episode, if I get to the end of my episode and go to the next one, it will start wherever she is.

We also have Amazon Prime, and it asks at the start who is watching. Also, we used to have Sling, and it was my account, but we could have 2 users signed in on different TVs, and it would keep track of us separately.

Is there a way to set up Plex with 2 users on separate TVs? Like I said, we both have Rokus with the Plex app installed on each.

Any ideas?

Creating and using a managed user account for your wife should solve this problem. That will keep each of your watch histories separate. Once you create the managed user, switch profiles on her Roku Ultra. Make sure you also configure it to automatically sign in.

Thank you. I created a managed account for my wife. But how do I configure it to automatically sign in?

I don’t have a Roku device hooked up to test at the moment but, as I recall, the setting to sign in automatically in the Plex app’s Settings → Experience area.

[Edit]
I should have waited a second before clicking reply. According to the docs it is indeed under Settings → Experience.

Small caveat: From my own experience setting this on the Roku in our home, the option to Automatically Sign In is only on the preferences for the master account profile. It doesn’t appear when you are on the Managed User’s preferences. So you need to set it there, and then switch to the desired user.

Thanks, but I don’t see how to get to Settings > Experience, either on my wife’s or my own account. What are the steps to get there?

There are a couple of ways to get to settings. Before doing either of these, make sure you’re on your (the admin’s) profile.

  • Navigate to and click on your username/avatar at the top left of the UI. Then select settings from the list of available options.
  • Navigate to the gear icon all the way at the bottom of the list of the navigation panel at the left of the screen.

Then click down to Experience and check the box for Automatically Sign In.

Once you do that you can back out to the home scree and then switch to your wife’s profile. The next time you close the app and then subsequently open it, it will start in her profile.

Hope that helps.

  1. When on your profile on Plex, open the left sidebar, go all the way to the top, and highlight your user icon. Select it.
  2. Choose “Settings” on the options presented.
  3. On the Settings screen, choose “Experience” on the left (not “Player Experience”).
  4. The auto sign-in setting is the first one on the right.
