How to mirror tags update to library?

Server Version#: 4.131.1
Player Version#: Plexamp 4.10.1

Dears,
when I update some tags on music files, how to let Plex update library?

Library and metadata update commands look to have no effect.

Regs

Please start by telling which type of meta tags you have updated.

Also very important: do you have “prefer local metadata” activated or disabled in the properties of your music library?

It’s probably best to show the folder structure of the audio files and the relevant meta tags of these files, maybe like this:

Dear,
I have prefer local metadata enabled.

I’m just talking about any tags like album, year, or the cover.

Sometimes it gets the updates on itself, sometimes, I need to force a library update.

You are using the hopelessly outdated (and unsupported) legacy scanners and agents for your library.
Only “Plex Music” is supported.

What I am mentioning in here Why is Plex ignoring all the metadata on my MP3? [SOLVED] affects all of these things as well. It is therefore very relevant to your issues.

Dear,
I switched to Plex Music, rescanned library and cleared caches.

I edited an album, then I rescanned.

Now I have missing tracks on edited album:

I updated year and cover for all tracks, but scanner detected only some, some others still result with old year and cover as another album and some others are zombied:

What’s wrong?

Here it is:

I tried update metadata and now another album of the same artist, depite tags are still ok, disappeared from Plex…

It’s a little bit confusing…

Is this a box set? or an album with several discs?

Which folder of the path was added to the plex library? (it should be Lossless)

Dear,
yes, it’s [quality]/[artist]/[album], in this case quality is lossless.
I had to move the artist directory elsewhere, scan, move it back and rescan to fix.
This also tells that it couldn’t detect new files when copied back…

Sorry, that is not what I meant.
Which folder has been added to the Plex library? You can verify this by editing the library.

It is important, that the library is pointed to the folder which holds all the AlbumArtist folders. Which in your case is the folder Lossless.
If you also have another folder which holds mp3 files and is named mp3, you will have to add this mp3 folder separately. In other words: adding the folder Musica instead would be wrong.

If your changes to the metadata are such, that the album has to switch into a different album artist, you sometimes have to perform the Plex Dance with the album. (although with music, you usually can omit step 4 of the Dance)

Dear,
here the folders:

The issue is that I often have to perform the dance.
Sometime it detects new music, sometimes not, randomly.
And, it looks to always fail to detect tags updates, I just added a cover to another album and it can’t detect this, also with a manual scan.

Any ways to force to re-read tags from files?

Regs

Yes, this is quite perfect!

I can only recommend you to always:

  • stick to the recommended folder strucuture: ...Lossless/AlbumArtist/AlbumTitle/tracks
  • always check embedded meta tags before adding new files. Of particular importance is the AlbumArtist meta tag. It must be present in all tracks of an album and must have identical content. The “Track Number” tag must be present in all tracks of an album. If there is more than one disc in the album, the “Disc Number” tag must also be present in all tracks.
  • prepare new files outside of the Plex media folders (those folders which have been added to a Plex library). That includes naming the files, preparing the folder hierarchy, and also inserting or modifying the embedded meta tags.
Don’t employ the strategy “add first to Plex, only if things go wrong start investigating and cleaning up”.
  • Don’t tell plex to automatically scan its libraries, nor let it scan them periodically. The risk that a library scan is started before all files have been added/copied is too high. Always copy all the files first, only then start the library scan manually. Don’t start library scans in rapid succession. Never let two scans happen at the same time.
Monitor the server activity icon https://support.plex.tv/articles/200871837-status-and-dashboard/ in the web app to verify that the server is not busy with a library scan, before starting a library scan.

As I said above, if the change to the meta tags leads to a change in the structure of the library (i.e. albums changing artists, or tracks swapping albums) then you won’t sometime be able to avoid the Plex Dance.

Since you are using a QNAP device: Don’t use the pre-existent Multimedia folder. This should only be used for the default QNAP apps, but not for Plex.
