I have a HDD connected to my Sony Android TV but it seems I am not able to read local files… However it is possible on Android smartphones or on Nvidia Shield…
Any solution to read local files?
I’m not sure what this has to do with Plex?
The ability to read local files is only available on Android mobile or iOS. And it will stay that way.
Your Android TV should already come with an app to read locally attached hard drives.

ok, this confirm what I discover. But let me say that it’s a pity to have a video player unable to read local files… The only solution is to run my NAS for that and it is definitively not an energy saving solution… Think about the planet!
Again: you should already have an app on your TV which can play media files from locally attached hard drives. Or at least one will be available from the app store in your TV.
But it won’t be named “Plex”.

Obviously there are apps included in the TV that can play local files. But they are awful compared to Plex. It shouldn’t bother anybody that we want to use Plex to access local libraries as well. I don’t understand your responses.
That’s because you do not understand how Plex works.
Plex is a media streaming software solution. It is not designed to be a standalone media player accessing local files. It is designed to use the Plex media server to stream content to a Plex client/app.
Well, at least I know that Plex actually can play local content in the Android mobile version, but not in the Android TV version. It would be great to enjoy the media libraries management also for local files, but if the user’s suggestions are annoying for you, I’ll just stop asking or writing anything in this forum thread. Thanks.
I’m not annoyed, and I apologize if I left you with that impression. I’m just explaining the mechanics of how Plex works because you seemed unclear.
The mobile app actually brings a stripped-down version of the plex server with it. This is what enables you to read locally stored content.
But on smart TVs it is not possible/practical to run the server.

I don’t understand. It is only a software customization, nothing else. “not possible” never exists for software. If Plex is not lestening user’s suggestions, I understand that I shall go away and use something else.
