I purchased the PLEX PASS and bought a Silicondust HDHomeRun Scribe 4K OTA DVR Recorder (HDVR-4K-1TB) as well as [HD Frequency Cable Cutter HD Digital TV Antenna (CC-17)
I connected the HDHOMERUN device to my COX MODEM/ROUTER in one via ethernet cable. Then I connected HDHOMERUN device to the Antenna via coaxle cable.
How to record PLEX LIVE TV using HD HOMERUN?
Also, after scanning, it found less than 10 channels for the HDHOMERUN, is that normal? I live in Santa Barbara, CA – one block from the pier.
I am running my plex server on a Windows Laptop
I also need to know how to get my smart TV to work too. Currently there is no connections physically to my smart TV…is that correct?
Be aware that Plex does not support the audio format (AC-4) used by the ATSC 3.0 channels. Any recordings from those stations will play in Plex, but there will be no audio.
Plex will record to the hard drive of your Plex Media Server.
I do not know if Plex can take advantage of the DVR capability of the Scribe 4K. Hopefully others can assist with those details.
Sites such as antennaweb.org can provide a list of OTA broadcasts. Search the web with “Santa Barbara over the air channels” or similar terms.
TV Make & Model?
If a supported model, load the Plex app from the TV’s app store. Then launch the app and login.
I purchased exactly what it says to purchase on the PLEX website for recording PLEX LIVE TV.
Not sure why it would not work?
I have a SONY BRAVIA TV purchased last year, and I downloaded the Plex APP, but when I try to play the HD homerun live TV through the Sony Bravia via the PLEX APP, it has no sound?
I don’t understand what you said about Plex does not support the audio format (AC-4) used by the ATSC 3.0 channels. Any recordings from those stations will play in Plex, but there will be no audio.
??
The Scribe 4K has both ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 tuners.
Over the air broadcasts in the US currently use the ATSC 1.0 standard. Audio is encoded as Dolby Digital AC-3. Plex supports these broadcasts.
Some TV stations are also broadcasting using the ATSC 3.0 standard. Audio is encoded as Dolby Digital AC-4.
Plex does not yet support the AC-4 audio format. Therefore, if you play a recording with AC-4 audio it will have no sound. This caught many people off-guard when ATSC 3.0 tuners first became available. The last post I saw on the topic said Plex and Dolby legal teams are working on the licensing details.
Stations must maintain their ATSC 1.0 broadcasts even if they broadcast an ATSC 3.0 signal. You won’t be missing any content by using the ATSC 1.0 tuners.
This literally explains your situation. While you purchased the latest hardware that will get you 4k content, Plex Server does NOT currently support the audio format that’s recorded with the video stream, which is AC-4.
As @FordGuy61 has clearly pointed out, many Plex users who have done the same thing as you, are having to wait patiently for Plex and Dolby to negotiate the licensing terms for the AC-4 audio stream to be activated across the Plex Server and Client platforms. You can either wait this out or return that model, opting to downgrade OR add on to your HDHR hardware arsenal by purchasing an additional model that uses the ATSC 1.0 standard.
Also, how come I can’t see the list of PLEX LIVE TV guide channels on my SONY BRAVIA?
I can’t even SEE the guide, I mean…I can see the guide on my laptop (the plex server) but when I connect to my TV and click the PLEX APP and it only shows the 8 wimpy local channels from my local area, half of which do not have sound.
Is there any other cheaper option you could recommend? Considering I just bought the HDHOMERUN SCRIBE 4k ? (which I intend to keep) I am thinking maybe I just need some bare bones device to get those ATCS 1.0 working?
The scribe is a tuner and hard drive meant to be used with HD Homeruns software however the tuner can be used by Plex. When you added the Tuner to Plex you had the option to map channels to station ID’s. Any ATSC 3.0 channel will be above 100 so make sure to use the lower number when mapping the channel or leave them unchecked.
You also need to create a TV and a Movie Library through add library for storing the recordings. Most of the clients were recently updated to combine Live TV and Live TV & DVR. The Windows client has not received this update so it will still be separate. On the TV you go to LIVE TV and configure the favorites.
My HD SCRIBE…1TB
Tuner 0 and 1 is 3.0 tuner 2 and 3 is 1.0, All 4k channel is HEVC audio, All 4k channel has 3 digit, my fox channel here in DWF is 104.1, UNV is 123.1… Not a plex pass member, I have jellyfin and it let me record on all channels on my computer in ts format… I get 83 channel when i do a scan…
