I am new to PLEX, and have never worked with a media server. Having read through the various Support articles I am left bewildered as to how to structure my libraries. At 10 minute call with Technical Support would resolve my questions . . . but, alas, I have not found a telephone number for Plex Technical Support. Perhaps someone here can assist, or point me to some useful information, such as some sort of User Guide?
I will have at least three types of media: home videos, photos and music. I am unclear how to organize the files, with the following issues:
Music
Like many, I have thousands of FLACs and MP3s. I wish to organize them by my own customized groupings. For example, I have a great deal of orchestral music, including many concertos and symphonies. I would like to be able to navigate to some sort of folder or group that would have a single specific concerto, or a single specific symphony. A given concerto will have 3 or 4 separate FLAC files, and a single symphony will usually have 4, sometimes 5 separate files, one for each movement. Is it possible to have a “library” called “Orchestral Music” with a great many sub-sections, one for each concerto and symphony. Ideally, these could be grouped by composer–Beethoven, Brahms, etc. I really want NOT to have countless files from different pieces all lumped together. I will have the same sort of issues with my jazz collection and my oldies. Moreover, the same will be true for a great many “audiobooks” which I have in as many at 150 separate MP3 tracks of files per book. How can I do this?
Videos
My issue here is essentially the same. I have many downloaded courses comprised not of a single file, but as many as 100 segment, or separate files. I would like to be able to navigate to “folders” (or collections?) that include all files for that specific course, but no files from other courses. Again, it would be great to have a folder/subfolder structure that would allow me to put individual courses of a common type (e.g., software training) together in a “parent folder” with individual courses in sub-folders. How can I do this?
Photos
Same issue. Thousands of photos need to be grouped into “groups” or folders, such as “Germany 2014,”
Should all folders of all media types be grouped into a single master folder on my dedicated PC hard drive? Should I use fewer “libraries” or set up many separate libraries?
Please help. I am not stupid, but on this start-up stuff I am flying blind.
Thanks for your help
