So I have been a plex pass member now for a few years and love Plex in general. I am curious though the way I have things set up if there is a better method.
Currently, I have a folder structure like:
Action
War
Drama
Thriller
Sport
etc.
I then manually drop a movie folder into one of these sections setup as libraries with the library going to that folder destination so the folder pulls all movies included in that folder. I also do this for TV shows etc.
So with that being said, I am curious if there is a better or newer or time saver method. I also have an “all movies” library where all categories(libraries) are included so that I can use some of the plex filterings for all of my content versus just looking at filter based content of 1 library.
I have also just this week moved my Plex server to a Mac Mini which stays on to serve content at all times so far it seems pretty great versus the older windows machine I was using.
I just have a “Movies” library with all movies then use collections to group movies the way I want or use filters to find different genres. I find the WAF higher with one library that can just be searched.
I use two (actually 3, but 1 is just used locally, not remotely) that I keep set differently - one with Collections turned on (and Hide items in collections) and one with Collections turned off.
the way you organize your media on the file system does not have to be the same as how they are organized in plex.
you can keep your file system all separated out in genre’s and/or categories, and use either separate plex libraries and/or single library or a mix of both.
to answer your question my library structure is thus;
i keep 4k content separate, so 1 that it is obvious which is 4k, and 2 so that it can prevent remote users from trying to squeeze 4k through my 10 meg upload without transcoding (which is impossible btw).
my video-misc folder/library as some workout videos, home videos, and other non-movie/tv content that doesn’t get any metadata.
