How to set up random trailer preview?

I can’t seem to enable trailer randomizer. when pressing play on a movie it just tell me to check if the movie is available. What can i do?

I’m not 100% sure I understand what you’re aiming for…
If you’re aiming to see trailers you have added to your library before playing a movie… you should be able to enable that on your server but probably also need to activate it on the individual client (some users don’t want to see trailers on their mobile but only on their big screen).

If you’re aiming to see (online) trailers for new movies / blu-rays – this feature is only available to Plex Pass members.

If you want to configure a custom pre-roll that plays ahead of your trailers… you can configure that on your server.

I have a folder of trailers that i want Plex to randomly choose one when playing a movie. But it doesn’t work.

Prepare your Trailers

Store the trailers alongside your movies or a dedicated folder and organize/name the files following the naming conventions for local media assets.

Example:

Movies   <- this could also be a separate folder called Trailers
  Movie Name 1
    Trailers
      Theatrical Trailer.ext
      Some other trailer.ext
      XYZ.ext

  Movie Name 2
    Theatrical Trailer-trailer.ext
    Some other trailer-trailer.ext
    XYZ-trailer.ext

  Movie Name 3-trailer.ext

Where .ext is the file extension

If you have those trailers organized properly in the main movie folder linked to your library, the trailers should start showing up already. If you have them in a separate „Trailers“ top-level folder, make sure to add that to your movie library (in the library context menu: ... > Manage Library > Edit... -> Add Folder).

Enabling Trailers (Server configuration)

  1. Go to Settings > Server Name > Extras
  2. Enable Include Cinema Trailers from movies in my library (the other 2 Include ... options require a Plex Pass membership
  3. Configure Choose Cinema Trailers from according to your preferences to pick from all trailers or only those of movies you have not yet watched

Enabling Trailers (Library configuration)

Configure which libraries you want to allow showing trailers.

  1. Go to the library context menu
  2. Open ... > Manage Library > Edit...
  3. On the advanced tab, enable/disable Enable Cinema Trailers (e.g. I’ve got a library of short films for which I don’t want to see trailers)

Enabling Trailers (client configuration)

Each client has a setting to configure if / how many trailers to show.
For Plex Web you can find this in Settings > Plex Web > Player > Cinema Trailers to Play Before Movies and select from None to 5 trailers.

Similar settings can be found in other clients too. See the „Settings“ support page for your respective clients if you cannot find it immediately.
