Hi,
I want to evaluate plex for live tv/dvr to see how it compares to hdhomerun and kodi.
I have a new 718+ synology nas for storage. However I read an article last night that says that plex doesn’t work well with synology because hardware transcoding is broken. They recommended that you use shield for transcoding but said the nas can still be used for storage of recorded shows.
Is this the best way to do this? And I install both parts to the shield and nothing to the nas correct?

You are making a choice of where to put the Plex Media Server which can run on both the Shield or the NAS. the Shield can be a client as well, (running plex for android client). I’m unaware of how the Shield interacts with the NAS for storage. You’ll mostly only get answers about running PMS on the NAS in this forum as that is what it’s topic is.
If you want more details on setting up the Shield as the PMS with the NAS as only storage you should head over to the Shield forum. If you want details on the NAS being the PMS and the shield being a client, this is the place.

I have tried to install everything on the shield but it will not complete installation. A faq makes it seem like this will only work on the higher end model. Have you got the client/server running on a standard shield? Thanks.
I use the Shield as a Client (not a server) and I use my 718+ as the Server and the storage. It’s my understanding that the basic shield (non-pro) can run PMS but is limited on storage since it can’t put certain things outside of the 16GB storage on board.
Since I have no experience with PMS on a shield what I can tell you is that with more RAM the 718+ can be a great Plex Server. Handily the shield is also basically one of the best plex clients as far as what it can direct play. Being able to direct play your content means less CPU requirement on your Server.
I have read a few replies that basically said they got it to work on shield but it’s not very stable so I am going to just try it on the nas and see how it goes. I did finally get the install to complete by unchecking the build libraries function. But plex can’t see the server from the web ui so I don’t think it is working. Let me see if I have better luck with the nas. Thanks.
Short story: got it working on shield. Server would not show up UNTIL i also installed it on NAS. Now I have 2 servers but only configured the internal one and that is what I am using for now. I still want to try it on the 718 and compare . The reports I read said shield/server combo did not work when recording as it would cause screen to freeze and be jerky. So far recording first show and fine at least for now. Thanks for the help.
Glad that is working for you. But to put the records straight, I didn’t say freeze and be jerky. I said micro stutter on playback (YouTube, amazon, etc) when the Shield is recording. That is not the same thing! If you don’t have this, that’s a good news.
You are kind of difficult to follow and difficult to give help. You write on both boards at the same time mixing installations. I suggest that you keep pms on Shield on Shield board and PMS on nas on this board.
Sorry about the confusion. Last day of vacation and “ADD” makes me jump back and forth trying to do too much at once. Your comment was not the only one talking about issues on shield/server install. I also read them on the shield forum as well fwiw.
And I did start to get some of those issues- but NOT until I started getting of disk space messages after almost 1 hour of recording. It was not that bad, but it looks like it’s going to cache live video on the machine and not the nas and this will give me out of space problems so I went ahead and installed on the 718 nas. For some reason its slow updating the guilde but otherwise working.
So thanks for all the help AND sorry for the confusion on my part.
Is there any way to disable ( but not remove) server on shield?
It worked on the nas, but is very slow loading guide (about 6 hours). It played tv at first then channels started dying. Then tonight it could not even see the guide and plex could not access it remotely even though it said it was online. Tried reinstalling but had issues until I shut down shield. Now it installed but will be hours before guide is ready so time to hit the bed and try again tomorrow.
It works but is too slow to be useful to be honest.
