How to show artist name and other info within library view?

Hi I have just set up Plex on a Synology NAS and have imported all my music into the app.

On my web and phone plex I have set my library view to folders as all my music is already well organised.

I am a DJ and all my files only have have the following metadata: Artist - Title - Remixed By
As the extra metadata cluttered up the DJ software view the rest of the metadata has been removed so there is no album artist / artwork/ etc set.

My question is:

When I click into my music folders on plex (web) all that shows for each track is the ‘track name’ and ‘Unknown Album’ and the ‘track time’. On my phone (samsung) in library view it shows ‘track name’, ‘various artists’ (I presume as there is no album artist set) and ‘Unknown Album’

Is there anyway to change the view within folders so that instead of displaying the ‘track name’ and ‘album artist name’ or ‘album name’ it shows the ‘track name’ and the ‘artist name’ and preferably the ‘Remixed By’ column from the metadata?

Thanks

This is interesting. I would like to help you figure this out. I am curious as to how do you have the files named?

For example. Daft Punk Tron Legacy Reconfigured album. How would you name the file?

I have the file named as:
01 - Derezzed (The Glitch Mob Remix).flac

Also do you have any folders? Or just a bunch of tracks in one main folder?

Thanks for replying  I have a couple of naming conventions depending on where the tracks came from. I have ripped all of my cds and where tracks have come from those rips they have exactly the same naming convention as yours above. 01 - Derezzed (Glitch Mob Remix).flac so that naming convention is ‘track number’ - ‘track name’ track name here also includes the remixer. On those rips the artist name would also have been saved in the metadata as the ‘album artist’. However within that particular folder you would already know that all the tracks are by Daft Punk as it’s one of their albums.

Where the problem starts is with tracks that have been ripped from CD compilations so within those compilation album folders you can only see the track name and the album name so I have no idea who the artist is until I play the track and it comes up at that point on the plex music player.

The other naming convention is where the tracks have originally been prepared for my DJ sets and that is: artist - track name (remixed by). Here the naming covention is slightly different. In that (remixed by) is a seperate entity and not part of the track name (that is so it sits in a different column on the DJ software from the track name). On those tracks all other metadata has been removed so there is no album artists etc

Those tracks are saved in folders then sub folders depending on the genre and some of the folders can have 100s of tracks in them all by different artists and with mutiple different remixes of each track. The folders are very well organised.

The same issue as with compilations applies here. If I click into a particular folder say French House with lots of different artists and which has 3 remixes of Daft Punk Around the world firstly I don’t know who the artists is until I play the track as the plex folders view only displays the name of the track i.e ‘around the world’. I obviously know that one is daft punk just from memory but If I wanted to play a particular remix I have no idea in plex which one of the three ‘around the world’s’ that remix that is without playing each track till I find the right one as it doesn’t display the remixed by info

Basically I’m just looking for a way for plex to display more info such as the artist name when I’m looking through my folders in the library mode. I can actually live without knowing which remix it is but the not having the artist name is a bit of a pain as I have a gazillion tracks.

Hope that all makes sense.

Yeah that makes sense. I have used serato so I have an idea of what your thinking of doing. Trying to get Plex to display sort of like a crate or on deck. Its a good idea but also not how plex functions. I tried a bunch of different folder variations and tags out of curiosity to see if I could get the folder view to show more info. I tried creating folders and sub folders so that I could click through but by the time I get to the tracks, I forget where I started. If you are queuing up tracks to play, or trying to match something this would be annoying and confusing. Looks like what your asking is not possible.

The only thing I could think of would be to put the information you want to see in the title. Or sort your music different in the folders. But you would have to rename and move all your tracks and tell plex to use embeded tags. But that would most likely be a pain and a mess.

Another thing you could consider, is creating a smart playlist, and going off the playists?. Maybe? But Plex doesn’t have the option to create a playlist using the remixer/remized meta tag. DJ software does a great job of making tracks useable and searchable by all kinds of things. Plex is more of a library than a tool to manipulate tracks.
