I’m noticing one other weird issue. When I let Madvr trigger hdr mode movies play quite dark with poor contrast.
If I pre enable hdr in Windows settings manually and then play a movie everything is fine… Anyone else notice this.
I’m having the same issue, I really dislike what 4:2:2 does to my desktop colors and my Vizio does a great job up upgrading the colors when it has an SDR source, so I’d love to have it auto trigger. I assumed it was a Limited/Full color range as well, but I tried every color combo I could think of and played with exclusive mode settings, and always got super dark video on any auto-triggering. I have a GTX 960 on current drivers.
For me having CGU in 4:2:2 is the only way to have HDR triggered correctly. It doesn’t work with RGB.
Also the chain that works for me is:
CGU (Nvidia) 4:2:2 limited, MadVr Full, LAV Video (Untouched) and TV limited.
My PC run at 1080p60Hz by default and MadVr handle the resolution and frequency changes automatically. Also latest Nvidia drivers 390,… are required for MadVr to handle correctly the automatic turn on/turn off of HDR.
It’s true that Windows by default on 4:2:2 limited is not very nice if you are using it for something-else than HTPC but as a dedicated HTPC, it’s ok for me.
Now that I have installed Kodi to use the Plex for Kodi add-on, I have also tested Kodi a litlle bit, to see how it works and I have to admit that Kodi with Aeon skin is just beautiful, then you add MPC-HC as external player with Madvr and you have everything to play all your videos.
Thanks for the heads up on 3.90, that driver solved my issues once and for all! However, my setup worked very differently. Lav Filters were continually resetting to 0-255, so in Nvidia CP I set it to 8 Bit RGB Full, everything to full in MadVR settings, turned on fullscreen exclusive and everything from desktop to video looks so much better and HDR videos are properly triggering on and off with no dark videos. Now if we could just solve that resume issue, this would be perfect.

Thank you for this guide. Very helpful.
I’m now using Madvr with MPC-BE to play all my files via KODI and Plex for Kodi add-on.
It works perfectly.
HDR is turned on automatically by MadVr when required, and turned-off when coming back to Kodi.
MadVr can even switch to 2160p for 4K file and go back to the default 1080p when the movie is finished and MPC closed. That’s perfect.
I have a 1060 Nvidia GPU, with 4:2:2 10 bits limited (GPU), Madvr in full (0:255) and TV to limited (Black: low on LG TV).
This is exactly the setup I’m trying but so far I’m not able to get MPC-BE to launch as an external player when I’m in the Plex for Kodi add-on. When I play the same movie in Kodi itself it will launch and passthrough the HDR (though there’s a problem there too that when I stop it won’t exit MPC-BE) but not in Plex for Kodi.
Would you mind sharing your playercorefactory.xml or let me know if you have any guesses what I might be doing wrong?

Sorry for the delay, I was on holidays. Attached is my file content.
Thank you! Does resume work with your setup? I’ve got DSPlayer + Plex for Kodi working now and I’m pretty happy with it overall except when I want to stop a video in the middle and pick it up later. If that works launching MPC-BE as an external player then that would be a big reason to switch.
Yes, resume works. You have an option on MPC-BE to make it remember the position in the movie when you stop it. So it restarts at this position when you run the movie again.

Thanks! That did the trick. Only glitch was that stopping in the middle and then toggling watched/unwatched doesn’t clear the resume point. But I just programmed the largest jump backward in MPC-BE to go back to the start and and mapped that to a screen button on my harmony, so that if a video opens to a resume point from a past viewing when I want to start over I can just do that in a single press.
Anyway, big improvement having resume again. Really appreciate your help.
Hey this is awesome! I have a quick question. I was trying to get 3D mvc playback using this method and am getting SBS playback when playing. Is there a way to get the full quality instead of the SBS?
Excuse my ignorance, which output mode is that, Line Alternative seems to work, but the picture is jittery I haven’t tried turning off the image retention setting yet. But my LG OLED TV wasn’t switching into 3D mode so I am kinda confused how the 3D is working.
I forget the exact name of the settings, but there’s something like “auto”
that should do what you want, but only if you have 3d enabled in Windows
display preferences. For my nVidia card, enabling 3d there causes crashes
when HDR turns on, so I use Line Alternative. But if you select that, you
have to disable pixel shift on the TV’s settings. Otherwise the lines get
flipped every few minutes.
Awesome thank you for the info! I was pretty much about to surrender getting 3D to work before I found this and at the very least it will play my mvc backups SBS which is better than nothing! I will try this out later tonight! Would you think having my PC plugged into the receiver vs TV would make differences on how its detecting what 3D “mode” to go into?
Great information!
Personally I have a Shield TV for UHD 2d and a Raspberry Pi 3 with RasPlex for 3d.
I think Zidoo X9 can do UHD + 3d all in one but I havn’t tested it.
Does anyone know if it works with Intel or AMD graphics?
