I’m running my server form a DS220+ with the latest version of Plex installed. Over the last week or so I’m getting a lot more buffering when on watch together and have notices huge bandwidth spikes coinciding with the buffering. It’s got into the 600mpbs range. It’s worse with 4k UHD but even on a low bitrate 1080p it has been spiking into the 120s. I’m fairly novice with network stuff and could use some ideas as to where I should look. I’ve not changed any settings other than updating my server last week when the new version came out. I’ve watched 4k UHD on watch together and never had this problem. I have 420mpbs down and 25mpbs up on my ISP.
bitrate on the media info page is only an average. virtually all media will have large spikes during scenes where lots of stuff is going on screen which can be drastically larger than the average. Generally during opening credits, action scenes, etc. If you “view xml” it will have values for “Required Bandwidth” when the server did an analysis of some of the spikes throughout the file
if you are using Watch Together then every person is getting the same spike a the same time multiplying the bandwidth needed.
If you have auto adjust quality enabled in client will attempt to tell server use transcoding to lower it when needed to keep it under whatever you have set for your upload speed in remote access settings. (assuming you did not disable video stream transcoding)
Thanks! So I have the auto adjust quality enabled and video stream transcoding is enabled. I had my remote bandwidth set to “original, no limit”. I dropped it to 40 mbps. Hopefully that should help. Here is the XML for ‘Fury Road’ that we were streaming earlier. So, are the various bandwidth numbers the highest various spikes that will occur through the film? Like the 20309 is a spike during some particularly action intense seen?
yeah those are the ones the server detected. since that 20.3k is the first one it is likely the opening credits or like that scene where he is being chased by all the warboys through the tunnels
