HW trancoding not work on i5-9600k

what does vainfo return please?

Apologies did not see a reply notice come in. For a little more info, I’m running a 9700k if that matters.

vainfo output below. Notice- This is run remotely thorugh ssh, if it should be run via a different method, let me know.

[xxxx@xxxxx ~]$ sudo vainfo

error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.

libva info: VA-API version 1.3.0

libva info: va_getDriverName() returns -1

libva error: va_getDriverName() failed with unknown libva error,driver_name=(null)

vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

Thanks for getting back to me.

The information you show tells me it doesn’t know what’s happening.

Not many Linux kernels have support for the -9xxx CPU’s i915 yet.

Known Intel driver problem.

We have to wait for it to be fixed.

Someone mentioned that the Mainline builds should support the latest iGPUs: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

v4.20.3 kernel currently.

Please allow me to show:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so

This is not part of Plex. This is either manually compiled or a distro’s add-on package.

Use 8700, got the same error message here,wait for the answer.

Intel has migrated to the newer iHD driver.
The Plex transcoder is being updated.

I am not fully briefed on details but understand this problem being handled in the upcoming transcoder update.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear there might be a solution in the near future.

Are there any timeframes for this?
Thanks in advance!

No hard date yet.

My latest knowledge is the Transcoder update is being regression tested now.

Thanks for that .

Hope to see this implemented in a release soon :wink:

Intel core i9 9900k waiting eagerly.

Kind regards

We would be willing to help test if needed! :slight_smile:

There will be forum beta thread

:smiley:

Are there any updates for this? I’m currently running a fedora server 30 with a 5.1.17 kernel, a i5-9600k, with a ARock 390 based chipset. I don’t know if this helps but here is the vainfo output.

vainfo

error: can’t connect to X server!
libva info: VA-API version 1.4.1
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib64/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

Unfortunately No.

I have bookmarked all the main threads on this topic.

When I have something to share, I will come around and post.

The current status is standard regression testing cycle. Transcoding video is complex. Plex’s transcoding is more than vanilla FFMPEG, hence the extra effort involved.

I’m following this thread and the others as well, I know its difficult to give an ETA but this issue has been reported end of 2018 and we are past mid 2019 now. People building new servers now are mostly getting the latest 9xxx CPUs thinking HW transcoding works while its not. While I don’t mind it myself (i9 9900K non hw transcoding works fine) others will be disappointed, maybe post a sticky about it that hw transcoding on 9xxx CPU’s, on Linux without 5.0 kernel is not working at moment? And maybe, just maybe a ETA on a beta so others can help with expediting? I’m happy test on a Docker instance which only I use.

I know everyone is gnashing at the bit to move forward.

When I signed in this morning, I saw more advancements.
Can’t tell you what I saw but I will say two of the most wanted are now enabled.
This is good.

I can’t give an ETA because I’m not in Engineering. I’m Customer Support and Test Engineering (aka. QA) with additional duties to Packaging (a facet of Engineering/Production)

Nothing personal against you Chuck, at least you’re on it with keeping us up to date, that’s better than no response like some other threads here for common and long running issues.
