Hw transcoding in linux

Just curious on how amd and nvidia gpu’s are for transcoding on linux. Read some places that some work and some dont.

And is hw transcoding possible on freenas plex

AMD GPUs not yet supported under Linux.
nVidia GPUs now have encoding, no decoding yet.

Intel QSV-capable CPUs have both decode and encode.

I cannot speak to BSD.

Thanks! I’m building a linux file server (ryzen 2400g) and have plex run on it. I want to through a gpu into it to off load transcoding from the cpu. So I’ll go with a nvidia card !

So I’m guessing the gpu on the ryzen chip is useless on linux? For plex

Please be careful with your use of Linux and FreeNas. FreeNAS is FreeBSD Unix based.
While the two are similar, they are not the same.

I just completed implementing HW encoding for the QNAP TS-877 machine which is a Ryzen machine. I did use their provided drivers for nVidia.

That’s all I know but CPU-wise, the GPU in the Ryzen requires MESA drivers which Plex hasn’t yet released. I do know know of any ETA for them unfortunately.

I know there different. Just debating which I would want to use as a backbone. Thank you! You’ve been very helpful!

I’m new to FreeNAS, was able to get a plexpass server install that allowed me to check the hardware transcoding button in the browser setup of plex, but it still does not do hardware transcoding for me on my J4105-ITX build.

Does this mean that this is being actively worked on?

I don’t want a Windows server, and with what seems like Intel favoritism with features, I’ve been so close to buying Plex Pass, but keep seeing posts showing that my 2400G (which is MORE than capable of decoding/encoding, especially with AMD’s fantastic Linux driver support compared to the proprietary Intel and Nvidia alternatives) is basically going to be unsupported for months or even years. It’s making me look at alternatives at this point, and I’d prefer to go Plex.
