I have a home server with P10S-E / 4L + E3-1220 v5. My server is running Ubuntu 18. I bought a lifetime plexpass and am now ready to spend about $400 for HW transcoding.
Now I have a choice: 1650 Super (7th generation NVENC) or E3-1245 v6 (P630 QSV).
If I buy a 1650 Super, I will only spend money on HW transcoding. Perhaps in the summer I can buy 1650 Super $250, but I will waste time waiting.
If I buy E3-1245 v6, then I will get 4 more streams and HW transcoding, and I can still try to sell my E3-1220 v5.
The second option (E3-1245 v6) seems more reasonable to me, but I’m afraid to lose in performance.
How much faster in transcoding can a 1650 Super (NVENC) be than an E3-1245 v6 (QSV)?
intel quick sync is the far superior choice. it will use less power, can transcode more streams at the same time (when using linux) and it is more stable.
