I am really angry at Plex right now, and I am giving up

Plex decided to undo my month and a half hard work in just a second. I was adding 1 new movie from the usual hard drive, as I do on a daily basis, Then Plex cleared every single artwork and info from my Plex interface library, all 780 of them, just left me with the new one movie. I usually put the movies in particular order and I choose posters that I like, this takes me a long time to accomplish, why Plex decided to undo what took me so long to do has me very, very angry. I have music libraries divided into jazz, movie music, male, female, etc, etc. How long will it be before Plex makes crap out of that as well?

The fact that I am paying for this chaos is what makes it so frustrating.

1-Is there a way to recover what I had just an hour ago?

Do you have database backups set to be made? https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/

how do you do that

I go to a particular library, in this case the movie library and I (edit/add folder/browse for media folder/choose hard drive letter/choose folder, in this case movies/add/ and then hit 'save changes.

I do this every day, sometimes I add 1 movie, sometimes I add 10, this time it cleared everything.

The only thing you need to do to add a movie to your plex library is put it in the folder with all your other movies that plex is already looking at then hit scan.

I am using my TV library as an example here but same applies to movies.

i have two separate hard drives named BigFish and BigBoy ( I am on a Mac that is why no Drive letters) Plex is always looking at those folders set up for that library. I never need to edit that again unless i want add new drive/folder.

to add a new tv show or movie just put it in that folder. and hit scan. there is no need to edit the library itself.

you adding each individual movie folder?

if so, you shouldn’t do that.

you just add the root movie folder and plex will index all movies in their subfolders.

ie your movie path should be something like

/media/movies

not
/media/movies/moviename1
/media/movies/moviename2

when you add new movies to /media/movies

then all you have to do is rescan the library, not add the new movie folder.

I can only guess that when you edited the library something did not save correctly and the drives/folders were removed from the library. that is why only the new things remained.

even if you restore DB you will still need to add all the folders you had before to library but honestly if you were adding a folder for each movie you should not do that again…

A post was split to a new topic: Music library keeps scanning

BigWheel, I am trying to restore my data, based on the link you provided, but I am stock on the part that reads “Duplicate the database backup file into the correct directory and then rename it to com.plexapp.plugins.library.db”, I have no idea what that means.

Not only that, the directions say to remove the following:

1- com.plexapp.plugins.library.db

2- com.plexapp.plugins.library.db-shm

3- com.plexapp.plugins.library.db-wal

I removed the “shm” & "wal , but I have about 7 different “com.plexapp.plugins.library.db” followed by different dates, including one that has yesterday’s date.

Can you help me with this?

The ones with the dates are the backups. and the date they were backed up.

did you have 780 folders listed there when editing the library? I know you want to get everything back but you seriously should not do it like that if it is. You will likely need to add all those folders back if you really want to try this. but that many may still cause problems. So it really is best in my opinion to just start over but we will see what can be done.

that said…

  1. Before we do anything go to your server library settings and make sure “empty trash after scan” is turned off. (this is so it does not clear database of files it cannot find after a scan)

to restore a back up

  1. exit the server so it is not running at all anymore
  2. Move those three files that you listed to the desktop
  3. with one of the files that has the date (which represents when the backup was made). edit the file name so it is like the file you moved to desktop com.plexapp.plugins.library.db
  4. launch the server

Well, I followed your instructions and it worked flawlessly. My library is back 100% and working.

Thank you so much, you spared me a heart attack and Plex a customer, I can’t thank you enough.

BigWheel, again thank you for your help on the library situation.

I have a seperate question reguarding Plex. One of the main reasons that I have the paid version is because I would like to watch my library from anywhere outside the home. My current modem is the Att U-verse, which I believe is a 2.4 GHz band modem, I have tried several times to make it work, but I guess this modem won’t get it done. I am currently looking at the Netgear Nighthawk to be able to use this feature. Is there anything that you can direct me to, to get this done?

I don’t have Att but is that a modem/router combo? or do they give you a modem as a separate device? If it is the a combo device then you probably need to keep it. Not sure if they can be put in bridge mode. ( I do hear they are a pain to set up the port forwarding.)

I have never used the Nighthawk either. I personally have an Asus router which has served me well for the past 3 years or so I have had it. ( I have an older version of this https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTAC68U/ )

I know I have seen other forum topics about the ATT Uverse equipment.

The matter was resolved yesterday thanks to the help of BigWheel. Your wise comment comes in a little too late and it does not contribute in any way to resolving the issue, for that you might as well stay away from my post.

This is in reply to someone who contacted early this morning me via email to solve nothing.

@luigy39 I removed the other posts. I’m gonna close this since resolved. There are likely other forum topics with folks who actually use AT&T Uverse that can give better advice than I can, or can give you router recommendations.

Here are a couple of forum threads dealing with AT&T and a router firmware issue causing Remote Access problems. Hope they help:
