I don't mind internet-generated thumbnails, but WHOA!

Server Version#: 4.89.1

I’m a complete moron about Plex, so pardon if this is a stupid question. But…

I’ve installed Plex, had it scan my library, have been streaming happily, was busy browsing though all of my files when WOW - I noticed that for a very small number of my files (just two that I’ve seen), the thumbnails and posters are PORN. Very hardcore explicit pics. The underlying video files have nothing to do with porn - nothing in my libraries does (scout’s honor - I share my libraries with the whole house, including a kid, and I can assure anyone there is no porn there). As soon as I noticed them I went into Plex settings and changed the thumbnails and posters for those two to something blank, since I don’t want to bother generating appropriate thumbnails.

I’m concerned though - if these two videos (they were both of MMA fights) somehow got thumbnails/posters like those, would there be others? I’d hate to have to go through my entire library and check. Honestly, I don’t really need thumbnails at all - the filenames will do. Does anyone know if there’s a way to (1) not have thumbnails or posters at all, or (2) at least prevent Plex from using thumbnails/posters downloaded from the internet. I see a couple other “wrong” thumbnails here and there, but all of them are innocent enough. These two, though…just NO!

Quick Answer: Use a Other Video library. Plex will not try to match against any online info, retrieve any posters, other artwork, etc.

If you don’t mind some diagnosis to figure out what happened…

The MMA videos - are they movies, TV shows, or a PPV recording, made by the promoter, etc

What type of library are they in - Movie, TV Show, or Other Videos?

If you used a Movie or TV Show library, Plex will try to match the video against its database that has info from IMDB, TheTVDB, and other sources. Items that were shown in theaters, broadcast on TV or cable, etc.

If the MMA video does not exist in any of those databases, then Plex might match it to something else. Unfortunately in this case some X-rated material.

Review Plex’s documentation on naming & organizing media files.

Items like MMA videos might better fit into the Personal Media Files category. Plex does not try to match those against any online databases.

If they are recent PPV fights put them in a movie library. Just delete the extra 1080p xyz type of info at the end of the file. They usually match ok except for some Prelims.

Either way…

Click the three dots next to the library those videos are in. (or all libraries to avoid future issues)

Then Manage Library → Edit -->Advanced

Scroll down till you see “Include Adult Content” and uncheck the box

That should keep items from being accidently matched to that type of material

Thanks, friends. I’ll be doing this as soon as I can. The fights were video captures I made many years ago (when Pride FC was still a thing), of select individual fights. So Plex probably had a dickens of a time trying to match them with anything. I wouldn’t have minded pictures of anything else - the Brady Bunch, a fried banana sandwich, or President Grant, just no porn. Very helpful and I thank you again.
