Movie Thumbnails appear zoomed

As usual…sorry if this is posted elsewhere, a brief search didn’t reveal anything.

My plex server works perfectly. Movies play, content and metadata update…etc etc. Only one thing, some of the downloaded artwork displayed as thumbnails for the Movies show the correct pic but are “zoomed in”. I’m surprised there isn’t a quick searchable fix for this. Surely I’m not the only person with this issue. Isn’t a show stopper but would like to fix. Have tried to refresh metadata but same thumbnail stays. Any suggestions?plex%20pic%20zoom

Inspect the folder where the video file is situated.
Does it contain graphics files, named folder.jpg or poster.jpg or similar?

If they exist, open these by double-clicking them.
Do they have a ‘portrait’ aspect ratio or are they ‘banners’ (i.e. extreme wide format)?

Thank you for the reply. No, the movie folder is just movies. These files must be elsewhere, no?

Inspect the properties of the movie files themselves. These posters could be embedded.

Thanks. I see the file system thumbnail is also off (zoomed). I am not sure where the file gets the pic…came from plex for sure. I’ll keep looking within the plex environment for the media files.

Anyone have any other ideas? Am I the only person with this issue?

If you see the zoomed thumbnail also in the file system, it certainly did not come from Plex. Plex doesn’t embed thumbnails into your files. It only uses them, when they’re present.

Try this:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

This will prioritize posters from the online metadata sources Plex can use.

Afterwards trigger ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the affected movies and wait a few minutes.

Thank you Otto and sorry for the delayed reply. I needed to rebuild the machine anyway so I did. Reinstalled Plex from scratch and got the same thing. Poking around, I discovered the “Posters” tab in the info of the movie object. The proper pics were usually there I just needed to choose a different resolution. In one case I downloaded a pic from the internet and attached it here.

So in the end, is just a User error but I wonder why plex doesn’t opt to go with the proper, or default, poster size to begin with? No matter, is an easy fix and I’m all set. Thank you very much for the response! Cheers!

Guess I didn’t follow this first advice as I didn’t fully understand but do now. Appreciate the direction!
