I want to use a Mac mini to use as a plex media server. What are the minimum specs you would recommend if I plan on playing movies to two separate iPads at once while I’m on the road? Also if I purchase the Plex Pass do I also have to spend 4.99 for each iPad I plan on playing movies on?

Short Answer: Not if using your Plex username & password in the Plex app on the iPad.

Long answer:
Unlocking the app is tied to a Plex Pass subscription or to an app store purchase.

If the person using the mobile device logs in to the Plex app with any Plex Pass userid, then the app is unlocked. No $4.99 required.

If the person using the mobile device does not have a Plex Pass userid, then $4.99 is required to unlock the app.

So…

  • You have a Plex Pass: No $4.99 for you!
  • You do not have a Plex Pass: You pay $4.99 one time.
  • Share with a friend with a Plex Pass: No $4.99 for them. Your Plex Pass status does not matter.
  • Share with a friend without a Plex Pass: They pay $4.99 one time. Your Plex Pass status does not matter.

Notes:

  1. The $4.99 one-time charge unlocks the mobile app. It does not give you a Plex Pass or access to Plex Pass features.

  2. The $4.99 purchase is tied to the iTunes Store account. If you opt to pay the $4.99 instead of a Plex Pass, then the app is unlocked on any mobile devices tied to your app store account (i.e. pay once, works on all your devices).

  3. No transferring the $4.99 purchase between app stores. If you later get an Android phone/tablet, then you’ll have to pay another $4.99 to unlock the app for those devices.

Running the server should be fine on your Mac Mini. I run the PLEX Media Server on an old windows 10 laptop. It doesn’t take much cpu to just play a couple of videos at the same time. Depending on the resolution of your videos and you upload speed of your network if playing outside of your home. Now if it transcodes, it will use some of your cpu and if that’s the case, there may be a limitation if there are several streams happening at the same time and all being transcoded but 2 streams should be fine either way.
