Users and sharing

Im brand new to plex and just purchased the plex pass. I plan on sharing my server with friends remotely. My question is will they have to purchase the plex pass as well or since they’re going off my account which already has the pass will it work like normal for them?

No, they do not need to purchase a Plex Pass. They will need a free account at plex.tv, to authenticate their client to your server.

If using a mobile (phone/tablet) client, they will have to pay to unlock the client (which has a 1 minute timeout otherwise).

Non-mobile clients - SmartTV, Web, etc - are free and do not have to be unlocked.

See Plex: Free vs Paid

  • Until the mobile app is unlocked (through an in-app purchase or a Plex Pass subscription), video and music streamed from a Plex Media Server has a 1 minute limit, and photos will be watermarked.

Thanks for the quick response. How much is it for them to unlock their app?

Just follow the link given by @FordGuy61 (Plex: Free vs. Paid). This also includes information on app activation. If I remember correctly it’s 4.99$ in the US.

Perfect. Thanks a lot

Cost is $4.99 USD. Here’s more info: Unlocking or Activating Plex for Android and Unlocking or Activating Plex for iOS.

Note that the activation is tied to the app store where you made the purchase. So, for example, if you’ve an Android phone and an iPad, that is two separate purchases.
