I am still having confusion on this whole PlexPass thing. I have downloaded the server and put a few things in and it’s working. I plan to only use it for wife and I while at home via the Apple TV’s in our house and/or each of our iPads. Then when we are at our mountain cabin, via Apple TV and again the same iPads. I was checking out how the sever was picking up the few things I initially loaded when my iPad started say limited to 1 minute. So the question, is that $5 in app purchase for each iPad (wife’s and mine) so $5 EACH plus if we upgrade the iPads in the future, do we have to pay again? Versus if I do the one time Pass, it will allow both our iPads? Would she need to login with my Plex login?
I think this is how it works:
If you want to view on iphone/ipads or android phones/tablets, you can pay 5 bucks to unlock those. For iphone/ipad, its a one-time purchase for the entire itunes account, so if you have all your devices on the same account, just buy it once and all iphones and ipads can watch all you want from your server. This should unlock these devices from ever being restricted no matter whose server you connect to. Each store has their own record of the purchase (itunes, google play, amazon).
…If you wish to bypass this, you CAN use a browser on these iphone/ipad, go to app.plex.tv, and log in with the same plex account the server is registered under. I did this for a while with my iphone until I finally got my plex pass. The web browser interface isn’t designed that well for an iphone, but with some pinching and sliding it can be done.
A Plex pass will allow you to use the iphone/ipad app as much as you want without having to unlock them. As long as you log on as the same account that has the pass (Ideally the same account that the server is on) you can use the apps fully without doing their $5 purchase at all. This should work on anyone else’s server you are invited to as well.
Plex pass has many more features for the server itself that you don’t get if you just unlock the apps themselves. Keep in mind that getting the pass after you unlock your apps is a waste of money, since you get the use of the apps for free after.
The 1 minute timeout and $5 fee applies only to mobile devices - phones & tablets.
Non-mobile devices, such as AppleTVs, do not have the 1 minute timeout.
If you do not want/need a Plex Pass, your cost to remove the 1 minute timeout is $5 total.
The $5 fee is tied to the Apple Store account where it was purchased. Plex also supports Apple’s Family Sharing.
Note that the in-app activation fee cannot be transferred between Apple/Google/Amazon accounts.
Example:
-
You pay the in-app $5 fee. This removes the 1 minute timeout for all iPhones/iPads/etc on your Apple Store account, including any future devices.
-
Your wife has a separate Apple Store account. You are the admin for Apple’s Family Sharing. Your $5 fee unlocks her devices as well. See the “Family Sharing” section of the Unlocking or Activating Plex for iOS support document.
-
You buy an Android phone or tablet. That is a separate $5 fee. The activation cannot be transferred between app stores.
-
Your wife buys an Android device and has her own Google app store account. That is a separate $5 fee.

To be clear the fee for purchasing a mobile app is not a Plex Pass. It only removes the 1 minute time limit
