I presently have one server operating remotely directly, but my second server is requiring the relay service because I can’t re-use port 32400. I don’t want to start easter egging this, and hope that someone knows an available second port for this function.
As I’m sure you know port allocation is nothing if not dynamic. I’m going to guess that 32401 is available, since you haven’t gotten it allocated to Plex but I can’t find it being used by anyone else. Certainly it’s not active on my network, and probably wouldn’t be even if it was allocated. That said, I can’t imagine that I’m the only person that wants a backup to insure that even if a system dies I have access to my library. It might be nice to get it allocated to Plex, it seems that it’s justified.
I’m not sure what you mean by this.
Disable UPnP and go with a manual port forwarding creation. It is more reliable, even if it means a little bit more effort.
You seem to have some wrong preconceptions about port numbers.
You can pick almost any port number you like for external ports.
(“External” means the internet-facing side of your router.)
In fact, I recommend you to pick one a little bit further away from the default port 32400. If you have more than one server, pick a unique port number for each server.
Create the port forwarding rules in your router. Consult the user manual of your particular router model on how to do this.
What I meant by dynamic is ports (like 32400) are allocated for particular uses all the time. I agree that on the internet side pretty much anything is available, but if I chose 80, for instance, I’d have a problem on my network side. I did exactly as you suggest a couple of years ago for my original server, but now that I’ve decided to replicate my Synology and PC to build a complete second Plex system, I need a second port that I can be fairly certain won’t interfere with anything in my network, either now (which of course I can ascertain) or in the future. Because I or my home automation company add components frequently, I’d rather not get surprised by having chosen a port that turned into a conflict. Why do you suggest further away? I’d have thought that my safest bet would be right next to a port that’s already been allocated to Plex.
