I need help resolving metadata issues, please.

Hello. New to these forums, so I hope that I am posting this in the right location. Seems right. Anyways.

I have been using Plex on my home network for a few months and haven’t had had any real playback issues, but I have noticed 3 different but related issues, all concerning metadata.

Reaper
This show has proper metadata for season 1, but season 2 is flat wrong. Despite detecting the correct season, episode number, and particular episode’s synopsis, the server names every single second season episode as “S1 E17 The Leak”…which is a season 1 episode, clearly. I’ve watched the show, so I’m not terribly worried about this one, just pointing it out.

Cannot properly detect/handle multiple related series in one folder
Per my personal conventions developed over the years, I prefer to have one folder dedicated to the overall series and the various particulars available in subfolders from there. As an example, my preferred layout for Sonic the Hedgehog shows follows, but others include Gundam and American Horror Story and seem subject to the same improper reading.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
    • [1] Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
    • [2] Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)
    • [3] Sonic Underground
    • etc
When nested as above, it will seem to think that the whole thing is one show, making it basically impossible to watch anything in order, nor can you find a particular episode or show based on metadata because it’s just haphazard. In these instances, this can be resolved by moving a nested folder out to the root of the watched folder.

Super Sentai
I’ve not yet had the opportunity to rip Zyuranger or Dairanger (seasons 17 and 18…DVDs on the way!) I do have Abaranger available (season 27) and initially tried my nested folder scheme as above. (Super Sentai > [27] Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger). It detected and displayed the show as season 1, the original Super Sentai! Figuring it might be related to having just the one folder in there, I moved it out to the root, and removed the [27]. Oddly enough, it still is detected as Season 1. All of these are properly named files, if that affects anything (ex, Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger - 01 - Abare Dinosaur Big Charge!.mkv).

Companion movies not detected with show
This one sorta makes sense, but is still annoying. When a movie is placed with a related series (let’s say Firefly+Serenity), it isn’t detected with the rest of the show, from the show’s location. Other extra features are also not detected in this way, either. Is there so way to force an entry to recognize a particular file?

Whew.

Is there a way from within Plex to manually set a folder’s intended show? I think this would solve most of the above problems while preserving my sensibilities - clearly, the most important issue here.

Thanks in advance!

You simply cannot do that in Plex.
No arbitrary subfolders are possible with tv shows. None.

If you don’t stick to the rules laid out in here:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows
all bets are off how Plex will react.
(And no, it has nothing to say that season 1 worked like you expected it to work.)

I can help with your Serenity question.

  • I added Serenity to my movie folder and let it collect all the metadata. I then edited the file on PLEX and locked all the information fields (click the padlock). As I remember I had to go to the internet for a poster
  • I then moved Serenity to my TV\Firefly\Season1 folder on my hard drive. I renamed the MP4 file "Firefly - s01e15 - Serenity the Movie.mp4 " so that PLEX would place it in the Firefly section of my TV page. Scan the Library.
  • Now Edit that Serenity file in PLEX and change the sort title to “Episode15” which places it at the end of the Firefly list and makes it clear its the movie.
  • I’ve done this various other Firefly media so it appears, sort of, that my Firefly series is 22 episodes long. This way all my Firefly/Serenity stuff is in one place and has all the correct metadata.
