Hi All,
I have the 2 series of Detectorists, and a Christmas special. (Watch them, they’re brilliant)
Plex only recognises the Christmas special, and puts it as episode 1 in series 1.
Path is:
F:\TV Shows\Detectorists
Then folders named:
Season 00
Season 01
Season 02
All files are names in the following format (from using 'the Renamer), in the appropriate folder:
Detectorists - S01E01 - Buttons.mp4
Christmas special is called:
Detectorists - Christmas Special 2015 (23 Dec 2015).mp4
Can anyone help me get Plex to recognise series 1 & 2. I have just got on to Plex. I love it, but it brings out the worst of my OCD.
Thanks for any help
James
Your special episode shouldn’t deviate from the s00e00 structure. I usually lookup special episodes [on thetvdb] and name them accordingly (which episode number it should have, season will always be 00). If all naming and folder structure is in place but Plex still fails to either match them or perhaps not even find them at all (can’t “see” the media items on the drive) it is often due to either embedded metadata in the files themself or a permission issue. So, check that your files are accessible and doesn’t contain any tags (or move the local agent down in the settings, if you need to keep the tags).
Also make sure this is really a ‘tv show’ type library.
Working fine for me with the following naming convention:
\omv\Multimedia\Finished TV Shows and Cartoons\Detectorists\Season 1\Detectorists - S01E01 - Buttons.mp4
Thanks everyone for your help, really appreciated.
Current file structure and naming examples as follows:
F:\TV Shows\Detectorists\Season 00\Detectorists - S00E00 - Curse of the Gods.mp4
F:\TV Shows\Detectorists\Season 01\Detectorists - S01E01 - Buttons.mp4
F:\TV Shows\Detectorists\Season 02\Detectorists - S02E01 - Car Booty.mp4
Pete_W, I got the correct name for the special as you suggested, but nothing changed. I checked permissions, and all ok. I do not understand the bit you typed about tags, sorry, I’m new to this.
OttoKerner, I have confimed, it is a proper TV Show library.
WilhelmStroker, I removed the 0 from the season folder name, so we have the same, but still only get the Christmas special recognised, incorrectly as from series 1. I’ve now added the 0 again.
I deleted the files from the HDD, updated Plex and it still showed the one entry. I deleted it from Plex (and emptied the trash) and opened Plex in a new browser, and Detectorists had gone. I have now put it back on my HDD and Plex does not recognise anything at all. Obviously renaming the special it didn’t like.
I can find all of these on thetvdb.com/. Is there any way of taking the info from thetvdb.com/ and putting it somewhere, therefore manually fixing this?
Thanks again for your help,
James
Since your files are mp4, have you checked for embedded metadata?
These can potentially throw off Plex’s scanners.
To avoid such troubles, go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows -TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack active agents.
Also, if you get mis-matches you must perform the Plex Dance after correcting file and folder naming and metadata.
I tried to delete any metadata on the files, but run into a Win 10 problem, getting a COM Surrogate error, and can’t delete the data.
I did what you suggested OttoKerner, but it didn’t work I’m afraid. I also did the ‘Plex Dance’, but that did not work either.
Maybe I just have to get new files, or find a way to delete the metadata completely, and then add it again.
Thanks for your help.
If you’re on Windows, try mp3tag which also works on mp4 / m4v files.

Did you install a “Codec Pack”? If so, remove all of them, restart Windows and then install LAVfilters only, if you must.
I have deleted all metadata using mp3tag, thanks for that.
I then run the files through ‘theRenamer’, which just seems to rename, not add any metadata.
The files with no metadata are still not recognised by Plea. Do I nee to add some metadata to them?
I did install a pack years ago, but I’m not sure which pack it was, or where I can find out.
Thanks again, again.
Did you remember to Plex Dance your corrected files? As per Otto’s link above. You do not have to have any metadata attached to your files. Where are the files located? On the same harddisk as the OS and Plex? Which platform - Windows, OsX?
I did the Plex dance with the new files. Still no good.
Plex is installed on my Synology Diakstation NAS. I am using Chrome in Windows 10 on my PC to access it.
I have loads of other stuff stored and correctly recognised by my Plex, stored in the same place.
All the media files are stored on the NAS
Sounds to me like a permission issue then- sorry to say. I can’t give much advice on the Synology since I don’t own such equipment. I would advice you to use UNC-paths in Plex and not F:\ (i.e. Double-backslash\MY_NAS_NAME\NAME_OF_SHARE_GOES_HERE) and see if that might help.
edit: Since the forum hates me currently and won’t display backslashes… http://searchsoa.techtarget.com/definition/Universal-Naming-Convention
Ok, I’ll give it a try, but with every other file working ok, I’m not sure.
Anyway, thanks all for your help.
Please, do that and if it still doesn’t work - gather logs; https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201643703-Reporting-issues-with-Plex-Media-Server
I’d suggest you’d Plex Dance the files (again), and collect the logs after you’ve done that. Zip all and attach to the thread (don’t post them all directly as text).
OK, so I tried streaming to my phone and no TV shows would play. I looked into it and I had renamed the TV show folder, and not told Plex. I can only apologise for wasting your time on this one…but…
Though Detectorists is identified now, there is no artwork, and it identifies it as ‘Detectorists: Series 2". When I click on that, I see 2 series and the Christmas special, all OK, but no artwork. I have tried this with the files with and without metadata (with a Plex Dance’ in between.
Can’t thank you all enough for your support. It’s really appreciated, and given me confidence to start to pay for Plex apps for tablets etc.
Can’t find a way to edit the above post. Fixed issue with fixed incorrect match. All good now.
Once again, thanks for the help and sorry to waste your time.
James
