i want my external HDD back from NVIDIA Shield. How?

i set my external hdd as internal drive to my shield tv, thinking it would make my mkv movies playback smother. it didn’t.
So i need my external hdd back to my PC, But Shield TV wont let it go. whenever i try to set back to “use as removable device” it takes me to format page but it always fails.
is my hdd lost forever ?
if i move it as is back to my PC - my PC doesn’t recognize it. lame.
it was a brand new 6TB My Book external HDD…

anyone know a fix to this ?

You have to go to your original internal storage and move the files back. Once that is done, you can change the external drive back to a removable drive and then eject it.

Sounds like a question for nVidia.

ok I went to internal storage. there is no option for moving anything in there.
just shows me category view of files types using how much on the drive.

If there is no option to move data now, then the 16GB internal storage is already your primary storage - the external USB drive is no longer adopted storage. The instructions are directly from Shield’s advanced setup page:

Can I change my storage location back to SHIELD’s internal storage after using this feature?

If you have enough free space on SHIELD’s internal storage, you can move data back to internal storage and start using that location again as the default place for app and game installations. Go to Settings > Storage & reset and select Internal Storage. Then select Move data now.

I’ve had issues moving to adopted storage and back, so I feel your pain. I ended up just doing a reset of the Shield TV to get everything back to defaults.

correct… I guess my shield tv is now the main storage cause its asking if I want to make my external HDD part of internal…
But I think it broke my external HDD… doesn’t work anywhere now., lame.

No it didn’t. You can attach it to any computer that allows you to manage the drive, then delete the partitions and create a new partition. The Shield TV instructions state that if you adopt storage it will not work with anything else - so you either format it through the Shield TV (which isn’t working for you) or you delete the partitions, create a new one, and have your drive back.

In Windows, right click on My Computer and select manage. Then, you have an option for storage devices. Inside there you will have partition access to any drive on your computer.
