Nvidia Shield TV External Hard Drive as Internal Storage Migration Question

I currently have the 500GB Nvidia Shield TV and setup my 2TB external as internal storage. However, now I have run out of space on that drive. I have about 3.5MB remaining. So I went to Best Buy and bought a 4TB external drive. I was wondering how I can keep my current 1.8TB worth of media and setup the new 4TB drive as internal storage. The current issues I’m running into are as follows:

  • Nvidia currently doesn’t allow for more than one internal storage device at a time
  • I don’t have an external bigger than 1TB to back up the current 2TB drive before I switch drives
  • I have been attempting to copy the media from the 2TB to 2 separate 1TB drives one at a time, but about halfway through I get a " this movie can’t be copied because it can’t be read or written" error.
  • You can’t just plug the 2TB into a PC and transfer because the Shield encrypts it for Shield only use.

Does anyone have an idea of how I can move the current files over to another drive safely before I switch drives?

Only suggestion I can give is to copy half of the data to each 1TB drive, But only copy small chunks of the data at a time. For the first drive that you want to copy 1TB too, Copy roughly 100-200GB at a time until the drive is full, & do the same on the other 1TB drive. Gonna be a nightmare going through that, But I think its your best option…

I have 250GB SSD as internal adoptive storage on my 16GB Nvidia Shield Tv & really struggle to fill 1/4 - 1/2 of it with apps & app data, Thats with Plex PMS moved to adoptive storage too… Having a 2TB, & definitely a 4TB drive as internal is way too much IMO, Especially when you already have a 500GB Nvidia Shield Pro… Just my option through.

Thanks for the reply. Moving it in chunks is what I’m doing now. I’m about 1/4th through a 172GB move currently. I also think I may have mis-stated. The data I’m moving is just media files. Like my 40GB 4K movie file for Blade Runner 2049. While the 500GB is more than enough currently for metadata and stuff, it’s not even close to what I need for overall media. I have over 440 movies and over 35 TV shows, some with 20 seasons.

I understand what your saying, But to use a HDD for media storage, You dont need to adopt the HDD drive as internal adoptive storage. You can just leave it as external removable storage & still view/use the media just fine that way. I mean you already have 500GB of internal storage… Why add more if its not needed?

I have 3 external hard drives, 15TB total in NTFS format connected to my 16GB shield (w/ 4 port USB 3.0 hub) as removable storage for Plex PMS. I only use a 250GB SSD as adoptive storage for a little breathing room for apps & app data, The other 3 media storage drives can be completely removed from the shield & managed on PC if needed. A similar setup would save you alot of headache right about now

Ah ok. I wondered if that’s what you meant. My question would be how do I host the PMS on the external drive?

The Nvidia Shield Tv host’s Plex PMS. All you would need to do is move your media to the external removable storage, Then when adding a library in Plex PMS, Point it to your external storage & let it scan & add the media to Plex.

Ok got it. Yeah I will definitely do that after this headache. I wasn’t thinking properly before.
