Id3 tag ratings for music

There are a bunch of old threads on this topic, but they are all closed so I can’t resurrect them.
I’d really love to have plex read id3 tags for ratings. I saw in other threads that you don’t want to edit id3 tags and that’s why you don’t write ratings, but even being able to read ratings and do smart playlists based off of ratings and genres and other id3 info would make the music feature super usable.
A lot of people come from itunes, I personally use musicbee and occasionally foobar to my music management these days, and it would be so much better if plex could read the info already in the tags instead of relying on a closed ecosystem of ratings.

Thanks, -Ryan

That’s probably because you were looking for old discussions instead of actual feature suggestions.

There’s 2 related feature suggestions you can vote for…
One to support a significantly wider use of available ID3 tags and one specifically to import the rating from files.

You’re right, my google/search skills were lacking on this one. Although considering that’s from 2015 and 2016, i doubt it’s getting much traction, not sure how we could convince devs to add what seems like a pretty basic feature of every other music management software.

we toyed with the idea, but unfortunately it’s a bit more tricky than you might assume at first blush. the media server saves its own ratings, so they could get out of sync if we read ratings from files as well. so e.g. imagine if you rate something highly inside our apps, and then refresh metadata on the album, the ID3 rating would then override the rating inside the server.

Hi Elan,
i wonder if this count be an advanced feature that isn’t on by default, where it either disables the plex ratings entirely and just uses ID3 tags, or if a user modifies a rating, it doesn’t do anything and just dumps it to a log so the user could use that log to manually update their id3 tags in a different software.
Another alternative could be to have a tool that does a one way push of id3 tags to plex ratings. The user could manually run this similar to the current features of “refresh all metadata”.

a third party dev could develop such a tool today without our help and without much trouble
