A great way to avoid the ugly blank Artist picture would be to use the last album cover available.
Artist matched > Artist picture
If no picture available then
Artist matched > If No Artist picture > Use last Album cover

Through the web interface you can put any image you want for artist or album. For artists, I go to the web and find one then put it in the artist directory as poster.jpg and you can do the same for the background if you have an image you like better. For albums without a cover (bootlegs, soundboards, FM broadcasts, etc) I use an image I created and put it in the album directory as folder.jpg or cover.jpg (either works). If you want an album cover to be used as an artist poster, just copy it to the artist directory and rename it to poster.jpg but Plex isn’t going to do the work for you. If you have multiple albums under an artist without an image how would Plex know which album cover to select?
I know that it is possible to do it manually, i did it for a hundred of artists. But it is a tedious work and many of us won’t just go this way.
As i proposed, plex could use the last released album cover in our librairie
You can see that other streaming services use this and it is much better than having a blank picture
Plex substitutes the artist image for a missing album cover so it probably should have been the default in both directions. Hundreds of artists without an image? Wow! I have over 2000 artists and have only had to add 4 or 5 images that Plex didn’t have one for.
All album cover are there , just the artists pictures are missing even if those artists are matched.
So it would be better for Plex to choose the album cover (of course if there is one) and use it as the artists missing picture
There are a lot of artists (depending on which music your are listening to) like this.
As you can see in the exemple i posted they are handled like this
I suppose my tastes are quite limited in that case. I can see where it’s a big issue for you and probably many others. I didn’t realize… sorry.
Don’t be sorry ![]()
It doesn’t mean that your taste are limited, everyone is listening to different kind of music ![]()
And thank you for taking your time to try to help this situation! I hope that a Plex developper could see it and take this idea into consideration
No, it should have occurred to me that there’s probably a lot of music out there that hasn’t hit the databases yet. And I mistakenly assumed you were asking a question when the title Idea : should have given me a clue otherwise. I gotta quit reading forums when I’m stoned…
FYI just incase you don’t already know, you can include local assets (artwork) stored locally at the artist level. If you name them artist-poster.jpg and/or artist-background.jpg then plex will use them.
It’s one of those undocumented features which is why I mention it. Regardless a good idea / suggestion if nothing else exists.
I know, as i said to THC, i already did it manualy like a hundred times.
The idea is to have the blank picture automaticly feel, not manualy
I did try it but it didn’t change it
Do I have to use local metadata in order to make it work? If so, won’t I lost all the advantage of using the Plex agent?
Needs to be named exactly like this and yes Prefer local metadata needs to be enabled. I had raised a request to not require this in the past but it was ignored.
I’m afraid that if I use local metadata it will change a lots of differents filtering and organisation from my librairie
I agree. See my previous thread on this Local artist artwork not used when prefer local metadata is disabled ![]()
I was even given out to for creating it as a feature request which is why its a thread which was auto closed !
I just rename the artwork as you said, refreshed the metadata and the artwork appears :
As you can see Local metadata is disable
Did they change something about it?
Not sure but they may have. Would be nice if they have.
If the local artwork is the only one available, it will be used.
Otherwise you’ll have to “edit” the item and select it manually.
