It appears that Music Media with embedded metadata is not always used when importing. Is this a bug with Plex?
I am using the latest version of the media server (Version 0.9.12.4) on my Drobo 5N. All my music is properly tagged and the artwork has been embedded within the music file itself. I have read the forums, and followed suggestions made by Plex and other users about setting the Agent order; however, this doesn’t work.
Is there a way to force Plex to use only embedded metadata? For this reason alone, I am not using plex for my music. Again, I just want Plex to only reflect the metadata I have embedded within my music.
I think I found out why Plex is not correctly importing embedded metadata for some of my music.
I believe when Plex scanner encounters special characters within the metadata it skips them. For example, Beyoncé contains “é”. I found that on every track in my library that contained some form of a special character, no metadata was imported.
Here’s a few more examples:
Something New - Single - Axwell Λ Ingrosso
Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern
Emmanuel Ceysson, Orchestre Régional Avignon Provence
Degüello - ZZ Top
This seams like a programming bug. Can anyone else verify this is happening in their libraries?
One thing I wanted to add to my previous posts, is that none of my music file names contains any of the following characters : “/?<>”\:*|" The metadata may contain them - but not within the actual saved file name.
Again, this seams like a programming bug. My guess is that the scan agent isn’t properly handling special characters when reading the tag information out of the file.
If it’s only happening on a select basis for you, consider yourself lucky. For me (and others on the forum) the problem is more widespread. I am a touch OCD with my ID3 tags, so all my albums are tagged with embedded album art, yet the Plex scanner is automatically setting the album art as the artist thumbnail for every album. Yet when I go into an album and click edit, sure enough the embedded album art appears in the artwork area, and once I select it, it’s fine. That’s very frustrating, as I’m not going to fix all of them individually and will have to just wait for the Plex team to fix this, after which I will have to Force Refresh the libraries I supposed… which takes considerable time with hundreds and hundreds of albums.
PS. In case Plex devs are reading this, yes Local Media Assets is at the top of my agents list!

I think Plex is a great product; however, because of this particular bug, I don’t use it for music. I am like you and very OCD with how my music is presented. I simply just want it to work, and it seams like a simple issue that can be resolved if they rework the Local Media Agent. I know Plex has brought great improvements with regards to Music, but it doesn’t mater much if it doesn’t work correctly for their users.
I know Plex staff are busy and can’t respond to every forum posts - but it would be greatly appreciated (by me and others in this forum) if someone from the dev team could comment on the status of improving Plex’s music metadata import functionality of the Local Media Assets scanner. I think it would also be important to know any technical limitations that may explain why it can’t function they way we like.
Again, any follow up post from Plex staff on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I do use Plex for my music. However, it is a back-up solution. I am very happy that scrobbling to Last.fm is finally an option. However I fail to understand why my collection needs so much manual attention.
All tracks are tagged by means of Musicbrainz… and MBid’s are not supported.
The other day I played an album and somehow Plex managed to mess-up the information sent to Last.fm in such a way that several of the tracks are seemingly skipped, and others appeared mutiple times. That is annoying… and I put it mild, here
I am very happy that you recently decided to give the Music-section some (much needed) love… but a few more hugs wouldn’t harm it
