If I dump cable and get Hulu, or Hulu Live TV, or YouTube Live TV or whatever, can I record shows and get them into Plex?

I have an HDHomeRun tuner and use the Plex DVR to record cable and I love it. But, I’m looking to cut the cord and wondering if I moved to another service, like Hulu, or Hulu Live TV or YouTube’s Live TV offering, etc., do I just lose the ability to have those shows in Plex? Or is there an easy way to move something from one of those services to Plex?

No, not legally at any rate.

Don’t worry, ad-supported Warner Bros. Is coming, soon! All nice and legal. You won’t need those ‘other guys’.

You might look into TV Everywhere with Channels DVR, but I haven’t personally used the feature.

I use Channels DVR / TV Everywhere and love it (with our AT&T TV formerly DirecTV Now).

Apparently, at least some YouTube offerings are available to bring into TV Everywhere, through Channels DVR, and once you have the recording, into Plex (I guess). The thread above will get you into the area, but there’s a lot more TV Everywhere being discussed and actively being developed.

That will require holding onto that Pay TV subscription, or subscribing to same, to get the most of TV Everywhere, but I wonder if there are any providers, like HDHR’s very affordable Premium TV (that was exceptionally bad), like Philo perhaps (or something that would be ‘good’) that would provide mid-level / basic cable channels that could be recorded and then imported to Plex via the traditional methods - MCEBuddy/Other?

Installing an antenna to get ‘locals - major networks’ (nobody wants to touch) and adding a Streaming/IPTV provider, if one is available, to record from - a user could put together something affordable that would cover a lot of bases.

Of course, that sounds too good to be true - and may be. A whole lot about this is a complete mystery to me.

It appears, to the casual observer - TV Everywhere is used in place of Plex because you can’t get what’s in your Pay TV Service to your Plex (sans flaming hoops). Channels DVR is stepping in as a middle-man, to help, but not cure a lot (some) of that.

Is that about right, or have I missed something big?

Channels DVR / TV Everywhere does work very well, for the channels that are included/available.

I’m unaware of it working with any live TV services, but the Playon DVR (using Playon’s Windows software I think) legally lets you download from streaming services to a local drive, which can be put into your Plex library. I don’t use it, I just know the service exists.

I have Youtube TV and it really doesn’t need to have a link to PLEX. What is on PLEX you can see on PLEX. What is on YTTV can be seen pretty much anywhere (except amazon fire sticks for now). The only think you lack is sharing the shows to other people via PLEX. But if it is all for local personal consumption, just flip between the two apps.

And you’ve completely missed the point.
