I use plex everyday, the players are great but it’s complicated to work and watch a movie in the same time if you have only one screen, it’s why it could be awesome if you could add the “Picture in Picture” support on Android, Plex Media Player (on Windows 10) and even Plex Web with the Picture in Picture API.
I take it that there are no plans to add PIP in Android. This feature would be absolutely awesome and would let me use this service more. It is absolutely frustrating to have to stop a movie to respond to a text due to the app.
Maybe we can close this feature request as it’s done on OS level, just need confirmation if someone is using Plex on Windows 10 though.
For Android-Phones it’s already done. One just have to click HOME while playing video and you are in PIP. Not sure about Oreo+ (v8 and v9) requirement but works fine in v10 and v11.
For Plex-Web, modern web browser like Firefox, etc. already support it.
Plex for Windows 10, can’t test that as not using that.
Added my vote. Would like to see PIP support on Plex Media Player. Would be very useful to have your movie/show watchable while you edit things within Plex, instead of the tiny window for ants that we have now.
The latest stable Plex Desktop for Windows 10/11 does not have any Picture-in-Picture mode. Users can shrink the Plex window and keep it in the front while playing, but it will still have the title bar, the window doesn’t respect the aspect ratio, and elements of the interface will just mash up and overlap with each other .
Plex developers, please implement an official way for users to play their videos through the Plex Desktop App in Picture-in-Picture mode. I’d play through Chrome, but it doesn’t run as smoothly as the desktop app.
This request is a bit broad (in reference to the multiple clients being called out here) - but at least for part of it this functionality exists on Android right now. Here is a screenshot from my phone just now. Before anyone asks - I didn’t do any research to go back and see when this would have been added so YMMV here!
There are also ways to do this on web as well. Firefox has a built in function for picture in picture (just tested it on my device and it worked great). It doesn’t look like chrome has anything native, but I found extensions that will do it. As far as Windows - that is going to be a challenge right now and may not be something we consider working on for a while.
@McWanke what about MacOS? This is a feature that really should be available and hopefully simple to implement (or perhaps not with custom media player)?
I tried to create a MacOS specific PIP feature request to be specific, however it was closed as a duplicate and I was told to vote on this thread.
Would love to add here, been a Plex Pass user for more than 7 years, and upgraded my server to a Synology DS920+ two years ago. My upgrade to a Synology was for a number of reasons, one of which was the ability to do HW transcoding and direct play of 4K content.
But… today while trying to watch a 1080p episode of a TV show over my LAN (Gigabit ethernet connection between my Mac and Synology), I had buffering. From my understanding, direct play of MKV files don’t work within the browser (Watching via Safari). The reason I’m using Safari is, I can do Picture-in-Picture on macOS with Safari and Plex.
The Plex native app perfectly does direct play of my content, with no buffering at all. But it doesn’t support Picture-in-Picture.
Would love to see this feature added to Plex for Mac.
Plex on Mac would be better with Picture in Picture mode, especially for bigger screens. Being able to keep video on top while moving between multiple windows would be great.
Include auto-play with Picture in Picture, so when an episode ends the next one stars without leaving PiP.
I’d like to throw my hat in the ring in support of MacOS PiP. I know PiP on Mac can be a bit iffy (firefox seems to get it right maybe 75% of the time), but given I have had some similar problems to @eytanschulman -browser direct play not working with all files - I’d personally rather have an imperfect/WiP but available PiP for the desktop app than none at all.
I came here from your closed thread, where it was closed saying to just vote here. And here I find Plex devs saying this request is a bit broad, including too many clients. Seems like you can neither have your cake nor eat it!
I too would like to see this added to the macOS app. I guess for now I’ll stick to Firefox.
Would be nice to get the Picture in Picture option in windows 11 so we could keep watching shows while working on the PC. I work a lot and miss everything, so it would be very nice !
Come on Plex, it is 2024…this is a basic system feature in all operating systems for ALL other players. What on earth is going on, why can’t simple well overdue catch-up features be made available.
