[implemented] Better Gravatar usage .. or internal Plex avatar option

I would like to have something other than a letter for the person watching my library.  When I need to reboot or do maintenance I need to try to figure out who to notify from Now Playing... but is it Jimmy, Jeff, Jerry, James, Jack, Jennifer, Jessica or Jamhal?

I experimented with a Gravatar account ... so I have an avatar for my account.   BUT... the usage of this avatar is hit or miss.

While my Web app ... sometimes shows it on the Switch User page ... it doesn't always.   And when I am logged in - it shows in the upper right for the account options.. but when I am on the Now Playing page .. I am back to the letter.

My PS3 ??  doesn't seem to show the Gravatar at all.

With Home --- and fast user switching ... it is really a pain to not have better indication for who is who.

With all the image support you have for meta data for TV, Movies, Home Video, Artists, etc...  It would seem to it should be light work... and have a positive impact to our usage of Home and sharing.

I would like to see a built-in avatar feature.

Or the ability to create an "alias" for each person so you can actually read:Jimmy, Jeff, Jerry, James, Jack, Jennifer, Jessica or Jamhal

Sometimes the easier approach is better. :)

My avatar just showed up on my PS3 ... thanks!

I would definitly like to be able to set a custom Username/Avater from Plex!

I too would prefer to have a built-in avatar feature, rather than having to use Gravatar. But, since Plex is using Gravatar, here’s what I’m finding wrong with it:

As the OP said, the Gravatar’s appearance in Plex Web is inconsistent.

  1. It does not appear on the Switch User page.

  2. It does not appear on the Now Playing page (for user activity).

  3. It does show up for current user, once logged in.

beckfield, try doing a refresh without cache (Ctrl+F5 on windows/linux, command+shift+R on mac). The avatars on the Switch Users screen seem to have really long cache times. My old Gravatar persisted for at least a week after I changed it before I finally thought to do Ctrl+F5, and that fixed it; perhaps the same applies to going from no Gravatar to a Gravatar.

I did that several times before I reported it, including manually clearing the cache. I’m running Firefox 41.0.1 on Linux Mint 17.1. I also have Pale Moon installed, which is a fork of Firefox from before their major UI change. It maintains its own cache, and I don’t use it very often, and it’s showing the same thing.

Plex Forums have their own picture, I would say, using that makes more sense than Gravatar. However that would not work for managed subaccounts, so I don’t think that this is a good fix, but better than the current option.

This would be logical. Maybe even Facebook avatar sync or something like that for the non-technically minded?

How do you actually vote for this feature? Don’t see a vote button. I really don’t want a Gravatar account just for this feature. Its just like 1Password needing Dropbox for syncing, that has always annoyed me. Open Dropbox account for this reason only.

Please add this in a future feature cycle I know its not a big key feature, its a nice to have so if your Dev’s can find time to slide it in would be great!

you ‘Like’ the first post in this thread.

Since I can’t use Gravatar with my HOME/Sub users I think the only solution is a built in one…

I would prefer in built avatar, too. +1

I agree with this feature request so much, I unknowingly made a duplicate thread: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1159158

Let’s hope we don’t have to use gravatar just to have a nice account picture!

Thanks a lot, Plex team, for finally implementing your own avatar/profile pictures in Plex 1.0! Very happy with it!

Whoa, I hadn’t noticed that. First item in the release notes, too, and I missed it.

Well done!

Except there’s no way to change other avatars, even if you log in as those users to the web app and go to Users. Such a nice system for changing the primary account… why can’t it be applied to Edit mode for the other users??

Assuming you are talking about Managed Users, there is an existing request for this. Please add your vote by clicking ‘Like’ on the first message in that thread.

I’m in, we need the possibility to set avatar for “local users”
