[Implemented] Control subtitles on a per-series basis

4 Years??? Please Plex team, this is such a useful and simple feature!

This is nuts. What are you smoking plex devs.

I logged in and am making my first comment on a post because it’s so crazy to me that such a useful feature was suggested (at least) 4 years ago, and there doesn’t seem to be much of a response from plex devs.

I would even help build it myself, the people need it đŸ„Č

I’ve looked for this option several times over the past few years
it’s been so long that I don’t even recall if I’d already added my interest for this feature. This would be so useful for many reasons. Literally having to re-encode files simply to reassign their language so that localized subtitles can automatically be added
or having to go one-by-one to each file in a series is absurd. Both of these are time consuming, and even looking to come up with a programmatic solution to automate a personal fix every time a user comes across another use case where they’d like subtitles for multiple files
that’s basically not even worth the time needed.

Seriously devs, why not prioritize this and knock out a win for years of interests, inquiries, complaints from some long-term customers? Surely this can’t be THAT much work to incorporate a simple button or toggle in the ui, can it?

Oh please it has been requested 5 years ago, maybe it’s not the feature with the most votes but it’s not a feature too hard to develop and implement.
When you watch a serie with 900 episodes, having to change the subtitles for each episode is just plain stupid. This feature should be implemented without having to vote for this, it’s not some “extra” feature

+1, cmon plex, dont be lazy to the people who love your product.

It has been five years and this request continues to go on unresolved. What exactly is the problem here plex? It seems like it should be a simple process to match the subtitle and audio selection across episodes for a season or series after the user changes the settings but instead we are left to manually set for each episode or use third party scripts that can’t be seamlessly integrated in the user experience.

Still hoping and praying

Just added a new foreign language series the other day, and had to go and manually adjust all 60+ episodes individually on the web, so that I could then watch them on the TV with the appropriate sub settings (adjusting on the TV is even more of a pain). Would love to see this!

+1 to ask for this feature, it would be great for TV shows that are in a different language the viewer understands.

+1 id love it

Please add this

Shame this request is from 2017 and yet You still haven’t done anything.

This is such an important feature that I can’t believe is not implemented yet

Agreed. Was trying to figure out how to turn on subtitles for certain tv shows because I have trouble sometimes with the audio when the background music gets too loud. Disappointing to see that this isn’t possible.

Not only subtitles, but audio tracks also.

Or maybe automatically apply the last change in episode (in menu or during playback) for all current season. That’s much more simple to implement, no need to draw any controls for this.

Hi, just adding my +1

I received Plex Premium as a gift and it’s neat, but without implementing this basic functionality I will be moving to Emby when my subscription ends.

Literally every single streaming service has the exact same functionality:

  1. Plays in random languages
  2. If user unhappy, they change audio /subtitles
  3. The changes are remembered for the rest of the show

I would say this functionality is more fundamental than chapters, video games, free content channels, trailers, and all the other random cruft Plex has prioritised over core functions that, again, literally every other streaming service handles the same way

This would also be good for Forced Subtitles on shows that have non-native sections (such as the Klingon speech in Star Trek Discovery, or Elvish in Lord of the Rings)

Unless you want to display the subtitles for that particular show to be displayed in (written) Klingon / Elvish, this should be regular forced subtitles in English language and you can use the existing language preferences for audio/subtitles to activate those (in which case Plex will show forced English language subtitles whenever they’re available, e.g. to cover foreign audio sections of an episode).

This suggestion is about changing that default selection for an entire show/season instead of doing it manually (e.g. if you want to see Japanese subtitles for the entire show despite your default selection being English subtitles).

Exactly, I only want to do a forced English subtitle on certain shows
