[Implemented] Disable "News" from the dashboard

This feature needs to be entirely disable-able. I understand there is revenue to be made here, but if things like this keep getting added, I’m sure there will be a surge in development of open source alternatives, and I’ll gladly jump ship. We (especially plex pass users) use Plex and have personal media servers (often at great expense) because legacy TV is trash. If it’s forcibly inserted into our media feeds, we will go elsewhere and you will have no users left. Plex does not have the mainstream appeal needed to become a “blessed” portal for official, ad-supported (or even “premium”) DRMed content streams. If that is the direction the company decides to move in, it will fail. Your userbase went out of their way to avoid those already, packaging them up nicely will not increase the appeal to them.

I avoid the gas stations that blare this kind of brain killing click bait journalism at me. I don’t want to have to do the same at home. Please allow us to disable.

This is the only thing that counts, literally.

And it will completely backfire. Both Android TV and Apple TV now have content aggregation features (the Channels feature in Oreo and the TV app on the Apple TV), where it shows all content available across your streaming accounts in one view. What incentive, as an average, non server-owning consumer (Plex’s new target market), will I have to install the Plex app when its functionality already comes with my streaming box?

They are literally better off eliminating the free tier altogether for Plex and just charging for it, Pass only. That would be more valuable to the current userbase and probably generate more revenue long-term. The investors running the ship have zero understanding of Plex’s current userbase. And their plan to make it “mainstream” is idiotic and redundant at best. There are already many other better marketed apps that do this sort of thing.

Please allow me to get this unrequested feature off the dash, didn’t ask for it (did anybody), don’t want it, at least allow Plex Pass paying customers the option to remove/disable.

Please allow us to completely disable “news”

+1

I have android tv with cbsnews and haystack for news so its just extra bloatware. Plex devs need to address the watch later issue instead as that feature is way more popular with plex users.

Plex so loved ‘The News’ they sacrificed Watch Later to make it happen. Watch Later is not only broken on Chrome - now it’s broken on everything.

NIX THE NEWS - FIX THE BUGS

Hi,
didn’t install the latest update of PMS yet, but when I received Plex’ announcement of Plex News, I just thought that was rather stupid. I use Plex to watch movies, not to have yet another news feed.
Now I see that it’s not even possible to disable it? Come on.

Makes me glad I’m on an older version. News, really???

It’s not dependent on PMS so it’s version doesn’t matter. It’s build into each seperate client.

+1 this is ridiculous, how on earth can they just add this ‘feature’, with no ability to turn it off or disable it, and think that everybody wants it?
I am sick of the news and all the bullshit that is being spouted out, I just want to watch my Movies and TV Shows, come on Plex, get the remove/disable option added or I feel you are going to lose a lot of customers!

Elan confirmed on Reddit that they are working on being able to disable it.

However, they (and all apps) will be able to turn off the top-level News item, as we realize not everyone wants to even see that word  (tl;dr; we were hoping to lump that work into some other customization, but now the News piece might come first)

Reddit - Dive into anything

But my question is (actually two questions) why was it introduced without that ability? It is simply stupid to add such a feature without the ability to turn it off. Also why the heck is it only on reddit where an official response is found? Is Plex really that ashamed of what they have done.

This is one more reason why there are a lot of previously loyal customers willing to abandon Plex for other services even though those other services entail a learning curve. Plex is now showing even more a fear of their customers and a fear of direct discourse.

I do have to say that it is quite clear that Plex does not fear loosing customers. they are so sure that they are right they do not mind driving a few, maybe quite a few, folks away. I guess they figure that the new revenue will more than offset the losses. It is also clear that the revenue is Plex’s only consideration. They do not really care about what their users think or there would be some discourse with their users.

Either the NEWS is gone or i am. +1 on removing this BS. If we have plex we have the internet. What makes anyone think that someone who wanted plex to start with is unable to look up the same non sense (NEWS) on the internet or hear it on the radio???

I agree that Plex’s priorities and interaction with their core user base has taken a very debatable direction. Same with the privacy policy. Not all hope is lost if they just acknowledge that they screwed this up and will be more careful in the future. If they don’t, then I totally agree and understand the motivations for people leaving, myself included.

Yep, I got my subscription refund come through today. Now I have a refund I can spend that on Emby…

Plex show no sign of changing direction and are sadly headed towards oblivion IMO. How many people would abandon it right now if there was a viable alternative? News thing isn’t enough to get me to pack up, but they are working hard at getting me there.
