So that’s a yes? there will be a way to opt out of discovery and more ways to watch?
So we can all assume that our searches (That would be the data we expect to be on our server) is being monetized? Who is this being shared with? What can we expect that data we are now sharing to be used for? Is that data anonymous or tied to a unique ID? How long is it stored? How do we request that data be purged? How do we request what data has been shared?
In the support article https://support.plex.tv/articles/discover/ it talks about the media list of our server but does not explicitly state what happens to the searched text.
This may seem like a small thing but more and more your right to privacy is taken away one small step at a time. Less is truly more when it comes to the data you share.
STOP THIS.
Google is monetizing you – Stop using your computer.
Your ISP is monetizing you – Stop using the internet
Your Smart TV isn’t monetizing you – Turn it off.
Your car is monetizing you through vehicle tracking – Stop driving
Same, this is why I am now on the forums.
Off my own content ?
Content that is restricted use to my users ?
We can chose what we use. I chose to limit what small semblance of privacy we still have. I do not condone anyone or thing that erodes that. It is that simple.
I choose to go have a peaceful dinner.
Have a good day everyone,
this statement makes this statement a lie:
- Metadata for Personal Content . Except for certain exceptions such as Third-Party Control and Playback Mechanisms and image analysis (i.e., metadata about photos when these features are user-enabled, such as geotag information or scene recognition analysis), as described below, we do not collect or store metadata (information about the specific file, cover art, subtitles, running length, etc.) for Personal Content stored on your personal Plex Media Server. However, your Plex Media Server may anonymously send us filenames or other identifiers for your Personal Content for the sole purpose of providing metadata back to your personal Plex Media Server. You may disable this metadata matching capability.

“sole purpose of providing metadata back to your personal Plex Media Server and to populate our discover feature*” fixed it for you.
Absolutely!!! Discover, Watchlists and Search as pertaining to pulling/linking in outside media.
Do you not know what Caching is?
- You send Plex.tv a name to get the posters for
- That ANONYMOUS request is searched for in the cache
- It didn’t exist .
- It went out and searched.
- It brought back the data and populated in cache
- Now it gets sent to you.
What’s the problem here?
There is NO link to your username. It’s 100% anonymous
no i am familiar with technology.
explain what this statement says then?
“we do not collect or store metadata (information about the specific file, cover art, subtitles, running length, etc.) for Personal Content stored on your personal Plex Media Server”
doesn’t mention username at all. this is very general lol.
also this caveat clearly states only my server not the world. - “However, your Plex Media Server may anonymously send us filenames or other identifiers for your Personal Content for the sole purpose of providing metadata back to your personal Plex Media Server”
I updated my post but you just added a line or perhaps you are referring to another post ?
Also updated the link.
All good.
Please note that this isn’t directed at you as you are the messenger. My advice would be not to defend Plex but just be the messenger.
At least we have a clearer understanding of how Plex uses our local content, there is no going back and that eventually, we will have an on/off switch. Maybe.
I would also suggest adding your update as a sticky at the top ?
Not for all of us. I’ve already found discover useful as have no doubt many others.
I’m trying to understand you.
- You understand the server may send filenames (for matching)
- You understand the upstream has to collect and return the requested metadata to you.
- Is it your concern if that metadata, fetched for you , is maintained in cache for another user who might also have and want to index that title? Why waste resources?
I’m not trying to defend Plex.
I am doing my job representing Plex.
I have already shared that I have to cope with this issue too.
They don’t collect or store metadata about what is stored on your server. That’s a very different thing to having a metadata database for TV shows and films (etc) which users can query to populate details on their content. It makes perfect sense for Plex to cache details of the latter for the next time a user requests details for that particular item.
Yes and you can decide not to use the off switch.
no it is my concern that no where in that policy does it state you are in fact retaining metadata for personal content for caching for other users indexing as well as matching to external features. this policy clearly states that metadata for my content is only used for my server. it’s pretty clearly stated.
