[Implemented] Fully Disable Discover & search results from Streaming Services (More Ways To Watch)

Sorry to hear about your Mom. I’m sure those calls made both of your lives more joyful.

Neither is it the point to make it sound like there’s nobody who wants it.
The point is to suggest ways to improve a feature.
Technically asking for a feature to just be removed isn’t actually a feature suggestion either for that matter.

The “point of the thread” is to suggest ways the feature can be changed to improve it. So

  • “give us a way to turn it off if we decide we don’t want to use it” is a feature suggestion,
  • "I’d like to be able to have the setting per-User instead of per-Device" is a feature suggestion,
  • “Here’s a reason I think it being per-Device can causes problems, because I want to be able to use it on 1 device but have it off on others” is a feature suggestion,
  • “this has caused problems with kids seeing ads for things intended for adults so we need a way to prevent our kids from seeing it” is a feature suggestion,
  • “I’m an adult but I don’t want to see inappropriate content if I didn’t choose to enable it, that should be only seen if I opt-in” is a feature suggestion,
  • Even “I want to be able to control whether or not another adult user can see it just because they connected to my server” is a feature suggestion, even if it is dumb & legally faulty.

Other things, like

  • “nobody likes this get rid of it”, or
  • “I paid for extras so I shouldn’t have to see it exists”, or
  • “if you don’t remove it I’ll leave”, or
  • “this is an ad & ads are illegal because I said so”, or
  • “it’s good enough the way it is so just deal with it”, or
  • “all the cool kids like it so get over it”, or
  • “I turned it off by switching to Kodi”, or
  • “if you don’t like it just leave”,
  • etc,
  • etc
…are NOT the point of the thread.

Replying to someone saying “this is completely bad from every way you look at it” with an anecdote about its usefulness, though not directly suggesting something enriches the understanding of how people are using it, & the benefits it has, which can lead to others thinking of a suggestion for changing it that appeases some of the detractors without hurting those who use it.

  • A discussion about banning bikes isn’t just for those who ride them, or just for those who hate them, it should have representatives of both sides for it to make any progress.

This thread isn’t a Complaint thread, it’s a Feature Suggestion thread

Lost, the OP made it clear what he wants for his Feature suggestion.

If you have another idea, start your own thread.

Edit - and no, I didn’t bother reading your post.

@LostOnTheLine Vote count is still going up :+1: :joy:

I never said it wasn’t. I don’t see a problem with the request, even if I believe it to be mostly resolved, but it can have 1600 votes like Multiple Cuts of Movies or others & adding complaints isn’t going to magically become suggestions for improving the feature, & the ability to control other user’s use of the feature will not be any more legally or morally appropriate.

I just want people to stop whining & suggest ways to change it that might be accepted instead of just insisting it’s an ad or insisting that because they paid money it’ll illegal for Plex to show them ads, or trying to tear the throats out of anyone who offers counter arguments or considerations

This is the first time coming back to read a novela of a response from you when it hasn’t gone up. Kinda makes me sad

How about we take it down a notch (or two, or three).
Over 900 votes say there’s some interest in such an option. All the bickering and getting at each others’ throats isn’t helping. Personally I’m inclined to simply shut this thread down – I take it Plex have noted and there’s been little to no substantial additions to the thread for a few hundred posts.

It would probably be the sensible way to go now.

Locking the thread would look like:
Plex introduces an unpopular feature and is silencing critical voices.

But yeah I agree, this is pointless.

As the originator of this feature request I would not like to shut it down until its implemented as per what Atomatth outlined above.

I do however really wish folks who we all know but I’ll not name would just learn to move on. I don’t even read anything they post anymore and I’m sure I’m not the only one ignoring them.

There are still some sensible gems of reasoning posted in this thread every now and then. I still come back and read some of them.

But I also admit that I scroll (and scroll and scroll) to get past certain names because by now I kinda know their mantra

It’s funny that after about 3 years of using Emby exclusively, I recently moved back to Plex… And this happened. My husband still prefers Emby and I’m rapidly starting to fall in love with Jellyfin. It’s sure good we have choices!

I was in that thread since the beginning. I raised my voice.
@tom80H I can fully understand what you said and why you said it
But there’s enough interest in the topic that people probably start new threads (that you would feel the need to close then) just to rant about their opinions on that.

I am usually not writing to that thread any longer, but I am still interested in what other people think about it. That being said, I am not interested in certain people writing a couple of dozens if not hundreds of posts about their single opinion. But I manage to overread these completely, no matter how many bold words are within.

Just leave it open, people have their place to come to and chat about it, come back to us if you have news on that and please ignore the rest. Personally, I would be happy with that.

And by the way… thank you for your ongoing efforts. I know and respect that it’s not like being on holidays sometimes. Cheers to you, mate.

I support keeping the thread open, it can lead to refinement of ideas despite the issues. Perhaps a Mute ability to auto-collapse a user’s posts from our own personal display (and not notify) if we choose to mute them would be useful here lol.

I don’t understand why this BETA feature would be universally implemented and impossible to disable. It seems actively user hostile. Has there been any word at all from Plex about this? This isn’t a criticism of the feature, but of the decision to force it on everyone, paying users who don’t want it.

Yes, we were told that it was a “Contractual Obligation” with an unnamed Company or Companies that was supposed to be released to Beta Users 1st, but it took longer to implement than they anticipated so because of the contract deadline they were forced to push it out even though it wasn’t finished.

thanks for the reply. ok, gees louise, that’s an embarrassment (and worrying that they’re allowing the service to be degraded by ‘contractual arrangements’ - did they say with who and what they gained in return?), but at least it implies that they have more work to do on it and hopefully that means an opt-out setting or at least a ‘hide’ feature if they’re contractually obliged to provide it. Really frustrating to have to wait though, so hopefully an update is implemented soon. I’ve already had a lot of complaints/ confusion from my family who use it.

So we should have a way to remove it from search already I believe, & I think the Firestick, last I heard, was the only device that didn’t have the fix in an update yet, it’s under the setting in the search Settings, not from account settings, but they have said they are going to make it Account level instead of Device level, but I think they were not specific & that could mean that just the Discover will be Account level, but I doubt it. There’s a lot in this thread about it, but most of this thread is people complaining about it & trying to rationalize that it’s illegal & that because they pay for Plex Pass Plex is “contractually obligated” to have no ads, but that is proven untrue over & over again, but they just like to complain about it anyway.

If you go to the top & hit Summarize This Topic you should be able to see the important bits.
Basically I think those who want to be able to remove it are actually lucky that it came out in such poor state, because there was an issue with the discover showing adult titles from like a porn site or something so they are having to change it quick. I believe those problems have been resolved already, but because of them they are actually paying a good amount of attention to these requests & we’ve had like 3 Plex Employees reply in the thread with updates

You absolute legend! I hadn’t seen that opt out in the search drop down settings, nor did I know about the ‘summarize this topic’. Thanks for both and for quick responses. Whoop, that’s such good news, gonna let my users know right away.

No problem

Yeah, I think it was put there because most non-admin users would find that before they go into the settings maze because they would only go to turn it off after they used it, & then it’s right there. But I got the impression by something said by one of the Plexians that it was going to be put in both locations if possible

Reallocated my votes so that I could vote for this. Not that it will do any good since Plex does not listen to users (even those that have paid for Plex Pass)
