We’ve been over this a couple times in this thread, people don’t want to hear it so they just ignore it.
I personally theorized that it wasn’t intended to go to everyone when they “Flipped the switch” & the switch was intended to be for a Beta Release, or even an In-House Alpha, but when they implemented it it affected all instead of a targeted build. That’s an understandable & reasonable explanation of how it ended up affecting everyone while still being an Alpha process (completely untested seems most likely with the big bag of problems it had day 1) & labeled Beta. But people with the word Plex associated with their account said that wasn’t the case. But to be fair we’ve had at least 3 contradictory things by different Plex labeled commenters so I still believe that was the case.
Assuming that is the case it seems as though they have trouble with making it targeted, probably due to it being written into the clients but not-activated for a handful of releases, so I assume there was no way for them to test it before implementation. So completely turning it off would have been something they could do on the back end, but then there’d be no way to test it. So instead, since people were already mad, they just decided to leave it & work on different ways to disable it.
tl/dr: I believe they could have turned the whole thing off, but not part or for selected users so they decided not to because they wouldn’t be able to test it.
It’s also bizarre that so many people think they know exactly what’s going on at Plex, and in the minds of the developers. Things, despite their own personal experiences, they have no way of knowing. The conjecture; the doom and gloom; the “they’re out to screw us;” the “I’m obviously smarter than you” crowd has grown tiresome.
Give them a chance. They said they are going to fix it. Believing it’s a simple task doesn’t mean it is. Wishing for it to happen faster isn’t going to make it happen faster.
I don’t know what kinda paint you are using but if it takes longer than 2 months to dry it’s not very good paint… Though it sounds like it could have some other cool uses… But I digress
We are now living the second stage of contrarianism. When the complainers and contrarians reach critical mass the White Knights become the contrarians.

There will be a section in the Online Media Source settings page for Discover related features. There are still some finer details to work out, along with client work and testing.

Any infos on how it will be presented ? What options we will have ? Are you getting closer to the release ?
Client work for this change is progressing. Just like the other Online Media Sources these toggles will be made in Web. We have an internal target date that we’re shooting for but it’s not close enough to share, yet. Soon, very soon.
I sure hope that doesn’t mean it’s on the Client side, as that’s what we were told at 1st, which is not a good place for it, but we’ve since been told that it’s supposed to be a User Setting
I very much did. I quoted the part about how he pointed out that client work for the change specifically because the current Online Media ServicesLIVE TV & MOVIED & TV & MUSIC are under Account settings & he said “these toggles will be made in Web” possibly suggesting it is PLEX WEB or Client Settings instead of the Account or User settings
He said specifically “Just like the other Online Media Sources these toggles will be made in Web”. There is no misunderstaning in this statement. He clearly means a new toggle placed into “Online media sources” just like they have all been saying. Let’s not try to over complicate things.
They initially said these would be settings that needed to be changed on each client, then they said it would be Account level changes, then it’s gone back between what they said would be Account & a Client setting. I was simply clarifying with the Person carrying the Plex badge since HE said it was work on Client side. There is no reason for you to make it a needless argument
A lot of the code sits client side which has been discussed thoroughly but this has nothing to do with the clear statement of having the toggle “Just like the other Online Media Sources”. The other ad-supported media Plex provides which in-fact sits client side also has the toggles previously stated.
Throwing my vote in for this change ASAP. I totally get why Plex would want this feature. There’s no doubt money involved and some sort of benefit if people click through to watch from their streaming links, etc. However, I have Plex to manage MY media. I don’t want this Discover feature anywhere. I am going to take them at their word that they’re going to provide an option to completely disable it soon. I want control over what my users (my kids) have access to via Plex. Having this unwanted “feature” forced on us with no way to disable it was a huge mistake. I can only hope this is used as an example on how NOT to deploy a new “feature” in the first place. The ability to completely disable it cannot come fast enough. I have no idea what sort of priority this is internally, but I sure wish they’d freeze anything else they’re working on to get this knocked out ASAP. Love Plex to death but man this was a cluster…
EDIT: To be clear, this should be a server option first 100%. I understand client code might need to be updated to support that, but I am not asking for it to be configurable on the client. As the server owner, I want to nuke this feature from the server side. Now, if they want to offer additional control where a server admin could enable it (I never would) and then once enabled, users/client devices could have the opportunity to disable it for themselves if they want, that’d be fine. But priority #1 should be allowing server admins to be able to eliminate all traces of this if they want to do so.
I was referring to changes that need to happen on all clients to respect these new settings and their state. Just like the other Online Media Sources, once their state (Enable, Disable, Disable for Managed Users) has changed each client needs to know about this change and behave accordingly. Again, just like other Online Media Sources, this has nothing to do with PMS. These are account settings. These settings will exist for all users with a Plex account. You could create a brand new account without ownership of or access to a PMS and disable everything and see nothing on your Home page.
Perfect. That’s all I wanted to know. When they said it was going to be Account level there was some vague wording sounding like it wasn’t a guarantee so I appreciate that update more than anything else.
