I would really like to be able to pin items to the homescreen, ideally at the top I could create a ‘pinned items’ section.
This would allow me to pin the movies my son wants to watch over and over which I have to currently search for each time (2 times a day). I would also like to pin specific playlists to this location too but ideally any item, tv show or season, movie, music album etc should be able to be pinned for quick easy access.
Though votes are rare nowadays, you just gome one of mine. 
You can now pin static and smart collections to the library’s recommended tab as well as the home page (requires Plex Web 4.56.3 and PMS 1.22.3). You should now be able to pin/publish collections to your home screen → on the collection: ... > Visible on → pick from Library, Home and Shared User's Home
