Probably why Microsoft jumped on this ASAP.

I would first contact Sony and ask them to support popular codecs so that Plex can play videos and audio. Plex and the Windows 10 announcement, where they said one store for all devices are great news for the Xbox One for coming years. We will soon see loads of apps on the Xbox one and that will make a huge difference. I’m hopping it will be done properly and I will be able to start playing a game on my Windows Phone and then continue the same game on the TV once at home for example

If sony is listening to this, I am a relatively happy PS4 owner. That being said, if I made my console decision today, it would be Xbox. Please work with the Plex team for this!

The most complicated part will probably be to convince Sony to officially support MKV container and popular codecs simply because Sony is also Columbia Tristar and they are really involved in the cinema industry. For example they also declined EA Access because they have their own solution. EA access is a brilliant idea and I would personally prefer that they let the choice to the customers. Good luck to all PS4 owners.
This is something that will define, what console I choose, as well as many others.
I have always been a fan of the Playstation, not a hardcore gamer at all, but had all the PS's, until now.
The lack of DLNA features or anything really regarding local streaming, makes the PS4 a bit :s for an entertainment system.
Xbox one has it's flaws, just like the PS4, however, with the opening of Plex on it, it makes it a much more viable console/media center, something that the wife can use too.
If you can manage to get it for the PS3/PS4, I am sold on the PS4 as my purchase and as soon as it's announced, I will go and buy one.
I'm really looking forward to hearing about this, specially how MKV's will be managed.

Just bought a ps4 yesterday but saw the xbox app announcement today! If i knew this app was coming out i would have totally bought the Xbox one!

Just remember that Sony is also a film studio so could be political reasons for not allowing an app like this. They maybe a little funny about allowing home streaming services to their consoles.

I, like many, have been pretty surprised by the lack of functionality of the PS4, and had I realised it's limitations before pre-ordering it I probably wouldn't have adopted it quite so early. After 6 months of listening to the noises coming from Sony HQ I abandoned all hope of it ever being useful to me as anything other than a gaming system, and set up a separate HTPC in it's place to do, what I felt, the PS4 should have been able to do from the start.
Anybody with any experience of Plex knows what a fantastic addition this feature is to a console, and as others above have also stated, this would have influenced my decision as to what console made it onto my Christmas list. Having Plex on my PS4 would probably have saved me over £100.
