Plex Client for Playstation 3 or 4?

Anyone know if they're planning on releasing a plex client for the PS3 or PS4 that would act similar to the plex channel on Roku boxes? Thanks. Using plex through the PS3 is pretty terrible.

Sony does not have an App Store on their consoles, and neither does Microsoft. So the answer is no I am afraid. :(

YET!  We don't know enough about the new consoles to have a solid answer to this.  It is possible however.

Of course, but I was answering the OP who was wondering if there was any plans to add Plex as an app. So the answer is no. :)

Yes, of course. There's a big difference between a theoretical possibility and an actual plan.

In order to make a practical plan it would be necessary to have full platform specifications, and preferably a rather 'open' platform too, and that is the very opposite of what Sony strives for. They seem to want to make it as hard as possible for anyone not affiliated with Sony to code for their platforms, mainly in an attempt to squash all possibility of homebrew development. (Which they fail to prevent anyway... ;))

Still, even without a dedicated PS3 app we can still use PMS-served media in PS3 as-is, when activating the DLNA support of PMS.
We don't get the kind of fancy GUI like we're spoiled with in other Plex clients, but it does work.
And similar access should work in future Playstation consoles as well, as Sony'd have to be crazy to drop DLNA support.

PS3, PS4 and XBOX One all have BluRay players, so they wont be very good at playing back ripped movies due to Cinavia.

its a shame cause i would of loved the Plex GUI for PS3 look like I will have to stick with TVersity for streaming to my console and Plex for PC's

I don't quite get what you're saying here.

Does the TVersity DLNA server offer the PS3 some better GUI than the DLNA server part of PMS does ?

Sure there is.  At least in the US there is.  In the PSN store there is an app section.  The youtube app is cool because you can play videos from your phone when you pair it with the app.  I would love to be able to see a PLEX app for the ps3!

Here are a list of apps.

Unfortunately those companies listed has done big deals with Sony (and the other way around) to get the apps up there. One can't simply create an app and get it released on PSN. Not yet at least.

But, of course, if someone high-up in the food chain at Sony all of the sudden realised that Plex is the coolest thing since sliced bread then we would be allowed onto PSN. Something tells me the odds are quite high for this to happen :(

So even though there is no official Plex Client "app" for PS3, I am curious if it is still possible to do? I have a friend that we set up PMS on a netbook, attached an external, stuffed it with content, and set up PlexConnect for his Apple TV3. He asked me afterwards if we could set up his PS3 in another room. I asked him if he can connect to the internet (I don't own a PS3 so I didn't know) and he said yes. He clarified that he could go to websites. If that is the case, then since it's on the same network as the PMS, can there be some sort of connection made to the PMS and the PS3?

Thanks!

Oh don't get us wrong. We are only discussing a native app here. There are still ways to access your PMS from a PS3 by using DLNA. Enable it in your PMS and then your server will pop up on his PS3 as long as you are on the same sub network.

Thanks very much, I will make sure his DLNA option is selected on his PMS and then get him to navigate on his PS3. Have great day!

Out of curiosity, has anyone at Plex actually talked to Sony (or SCE, as it is), or is this all idle speculation?

If Plex Inc. has discussed an app with Sony they would try to surprise us with a product instead of talking about it before anything has happened. That is how Plex Inc. operates. That has its drawbacks but it is quite nice with surprises as well :)

Hi,

of sure, a native Plex client on PSN would be the best. But Plex has released also native apps dedicated to jailbroken devices like ATV2. Why not offering the same for PS3, in conrete, a PKG file to install by the interested users. I'm sure that there are out in the space millions of PS3's with a jailbreak, more than as AT2..  Showtime is currently the most used "3rd-party" mediaplayer. It is based on the FFmpeg codecs and the viodeo playback works fantastic. (including 1080p MKV) But it uses DLNA and this gives you not the same good UI expiriences as with a native PLEX client....

I beg to differ. I think it is the other way around as hacking PS3 means you are risking getting banned for life from PSN, and few are taking that chance I believe as the PS3 has a substantial higher cost compared to the ATV2 and often bought for another purpose.

The PS4 on the other hand might support 3rd-party developers (Although I still haven't seen a Sony executive say that all developers can get their app on the PS4, but maybe that will happen, who knows), but the PS3 never will. And as PS3 is now on the way of becoming a dying hardware with a weird CPU, I assume no client will ever be developed for it. Certainly not officially by Plex Inc. but I also suspect no unofficial client will be developed for it either as I believe it is to big of a risk to hack the PS3.

I have PMS using dlna and it works perfectly fine on my PS3. I can browse all my movies no matter what type, tv shows, plex channels, etc. I dont really see the need for a native client since everything works over dlna. I also use a harmony link to control my ps3 xmb using ps3’s and samsungs anynet hdmi control using the samsung remote codes with repeat commands turned all the way down as a well so it doesnt skip to fast when i browse my xmb. I do not use a logitech ir to bluetooth adapter using this method. Since I use anynet I can shut off and turn on my ps3 using my any ios device or android using the harmony app. I also can navigate the xmb which includes PMS to browse plex content, pause, play, ffwd, rwd, etc from those devices as well. From what I understand many other maufactures have hdmi control as well but I have not tested them:

Trade names for CEC are Anynet+ (Samsung); Aquos Link (Sharp); BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony); HDMI-CEC (Hitachi); E-link (AOC); Kuro Link (Pioneer); CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba); RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) (Onkyo); RuncoLink (Runco International); SimpLink (LG); HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, VIERA Link (Panasonic); EasyLink (Philips); and NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi)

Most stuff does work from a PS3 or other DLNA client as-is, but you can't access a remote server this way, to access media sections shared to your myPlex account from such servers. You can only access a DLNA server on the same LAN. So for such remote server use a native client is needed.

I wonder if its possible to use a vpn like this guy is doing to use the ps3 remotely. (Post #17)
