Importing optimized versions into Plex

Server Version#: 1.13.5.5332
Player Version#:

I’m currently running my Plex server on a Synology 918+ NAS. When the media is properly formatted, this solution works pretty well. However, when transcoding is required, it can really chew up the system resources trying to keep up with just a couple of streams.

Of course, Plex’s optimization feature works very well to avoid this problem altogether. My issue is that the optimization seems to be a little too much for my NAS to handle. Optimizing a single movie can take upwards of 3 hours.

I had what I thought was a clever idea to speed things up. I installed a Plex server on my desktop with an i7 processor and added my media library which is on my NAS (and also where my main Plex server runs). Once the library was added, I optimized a movie that I had been having issues with transcoding on the fly. As expected, my i7 burned through the optimization process and stored the new optimized file in the plex versions folder with the movie.

Now my problem is that the original Plex server (on the NAS) doesn’t see that file as “Optimized”. It just sees it as another version of the same file. It doesn’t show up in the optimized versions database and there doesn’t seem to be any way to import it.

Obviously, my goal here is to optimize my library using a system that can to it quickly, then go back to using my NAS as the server. In order to do this, I need a way to import these files that have technically been optimized by a different Plex server.

Any help on this particular situation would be greatly appreciated!
