Improved usability for identifying selected items

I’ll enter different topics for different ideas but they are all related to how the usability can be improved in Plex. I know you guys have made improvements over the years. I don’t quite understand why you don’t make it easier to easily identify which is the selected item.

My mom is now 88 years old and often I have to help her through the navigation because it is not evident to her which movie poster is larger. At a minimum, it would be nice if there was the option to always have an orange glow around the highlighted movie similar to the highlighted glow around the letter when selecting where to look in the library by letter. If you highlighted the selected letter by only enlarging it by a little bit without any other visual cues, I’m sure many users would have a difficult time even seeing which is the highlighted element on the screen. Therefore, you guys made it more obvious by surrounding the highlighted letter in an orange glow. It would be nice if optionally, a similar glow could be done for highlighted movies and highlighted playlists.

However, other than this approach, I also have another idea to improve usability which I’ll post in a separate topic.

PS. I’ll assume the tag “android-mobile” is also for “android-tablets” and any android TV boxes? I know there is also an “android-tv” tag, but is that for official Android TV platforms? Or any Android device which is hooked up to a TV whether it is running Android TV or standard Android? Regardless, I’ll assume the Plex interface looks the same for both Android TV and Android mobile which I assume at a minimum includes tablets.

PPS. Fire TV introduced an option to identify highlighted elements on the screen with a special banner at the bottom of the screen. This can also help immensely. Plex almost sort of works with this accessibility option. It would be great if Plex could populate the tags in all cases to make this a useful option while using Plex on Fire TV.

It doesn’t. If you’re on an Android mobile device there is an option in the settings to change the Android TV interface mode, But you don’t want to do that on a tablet device because it does not accept touch input then.

When the “cast row” feature finally got added to Android recently it was only available on the mobile interface mode initially, and there was an additional wait to get it on the TV interface/FireTV apps. So there can even be a discrepancy in features between the two depending on which interface you are using.

Thanks. Ah, yes, My comment was really for Fire TV since that is what she uses… I was just trying to figure out whether my comment also applied to any other platforms so I was just trying to figure out the difference between android mobile and android TV and that is one of the differences. It assumes with tablets, you want to use the touch interface, so I guess that falls under mobile. However, if you want to use a DPAD and have no touch screen, then I guess that falls under Android TV.

There is an existing request for this. Rather than splitting votes across multiple threads, it’s best to add your vote and comments to the existing one.
