In the Plex For Windows client, how can we tell if we're running the current version?

Server Version#: 1.25.9.5721
Player Version#: unknown, installed 4/2022

In the Plex For Windows desktop app, how can I tell what version I’m running and how do I tell if it’s current or in need of upgrading?

I find no UI element that lets me configure the client app, just a Settings element which controls Server settings, not the client. I can’t even find an About item anywhere. I can look in Windows Settings to see what date & version was installed, but no idea if that shows current version or not, nor does it tell me if the client has an update pending.

Even if the app is fully auto-updating, we need a way to confirm this, especially as all software engineers know, automated systems don’t always work 100% as intended. :zipper_mouth_face: Users must have a way to verify their build version for troubleshooting, and for peace-of-mind if nothing else.

You still can find out via the app list. App Version is indicated in its own column. Additionally you can right click on the Plex client icon and choose Properties, which will bring up a tab panel. App Version is located in there as well.

Normally the App Version is listed under GENERAL in the Settings of the Plex client.

Installed Version

  • In the Plex for Mac/Windows Desktop app: Settings → General
  • Plex Web: Authorized Devices ← For your devices only, not friends / remote users.

Current Version

Disable Auto Updates (also works for PlexHTPC):

  • Exit Plex for Windows/Mac Desktop
  • Edit %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\plex.ini (Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Plex)
  • Add disableUpdater=true to debug section (add debug section if it does not exist).
[debug]
disableUpdater=true

I know I can derive a product version through several means via Windows, but I’m talking about having the app version clearly available w/in the app itself. A “rollup” feature is optimal with status and “check for updates” functionality being typical. My point is, why do we have to know Windows’ insides just to know if we’re running the current version of the app? Call it common curtesy, UE design, etc. I’m talking about customer experience and expectations.

  • I’m an advanced software engineer and have probably been building Windows apps far longer than most people reading this post or even developing Plex itself, lol.

Oh, what timing! After posting a reply, I just saw FordGuy61’s post.

I relaunched the client app and it auto-updated (and took an extremely long time, too, and I’m on a high-end system). Now when I open settings, I see 2 sections as in your screenshot, one for the client now appearing above my server’s settings…indeed it match yours, lol.

This is perfect, thank you, and I really appreciate the help. /cheer
