The sequel series to the anime “Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt” was just released, and it is titled “New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt”, but Plex’s library scan instead treats it as the same series as the original, meaning the new episodes overwrite the old series’ episodes in Plex’s database. Could this weird edge case possibly be fixed?
Its something we will need to fix on our end I think. I have reported to our metadata team. Issue stems from IMDB combining it into one show as far as I can tell. It used to have two separate IMDB IDs but looks like IMDB combined it into one.
There’s some confusion on the metadata sites - and even IMDB changed - on if this should be 2nd season or new show.
As BigWheel noticed, IMDB originally had it listed as two different shows with two different IDs but have since set it as 2nd season of original show and forward that 2nd ID for “New Panty & Stocking” back to the original show. The content of the show is definitely second season (starts immediately after S1 finale) so TMDB\TVDB have multiple requests to combine the separate listings into single show with 2 seasons instead of 2 separate shows. Which would match IMDB and several other sources.
TMDB and TVDB have their external IDs to IMDB for the “new” listing as separate show incorrect now because of IMDB change. I have requested an update on TMDB so maybe it’ll get sorted out and they’ll merge it hopefully (TVDB changes are a lot different and slower). Either way it’ll probably take a few days for the changes to all shake out.
It might be easier to wait and see how that shakes out - that’s what I was gonna do when I found how badly matching wasn’t working even with IDs in the filenames which I assume meant Plex’s metadata cache was off or not updated yet (and couldn’t find a way to “split” it and set it up manually without a match like I can with a movie).
Ermagerd. Has this series even aired yet? Crap. Give it a little time for the myriad changes on all the metadata sites to coalesce so that Plex’s servers can suck it all in.
Plex aggregates information from multiple sites. As they’re all making changes in more-or-less real-time, it will take some time to normalize it. Give them some time to succeed before assuming failure.
Yes it aired. Most shows match when they air because the metadata sites - and plex - setup that data long before airing. This forum is for posting when matching isn’t working and it’s not working. Plex rep even agreed it’ll need some sorting out … so maybe the snide and patronizing approach you’ve taken on Plex’s behalf isn’t necessary? I don’t understand the attacking other users approach.
I apologize if it came across as snide. I had a look at the available information and it appeared as though it was scheduled to air today. Maybe I misunderstood.
My point remains though. It takes time for all of the ongoing changes to be reflected in Plex’s metadata. Particularly for very new series with active updates, why can’t we allow for some time for things to catch up?
Also, please explain how I attacked other users. I make it a policy to never do so. If you felt attacked, it was not intended, particularly since I think we more-or-less agree?
The metadata for titles are cached with Plex long before airing.
There’s clearly a problem with the data because this show does not match right despite data being present on the sources and using series ID markers, so that’s a problem.
One reason it’s not working right is likely because changes related to this show’s status is kinda mixed across the sites (new show or second season) but because Plex caches that data with links between that data sometimes these changes don’t get picked up by Plex. Plex isn’t watching all shows all the time so we report it here in the forums to let them know when it comes up.
It’s been common practice to report these types of things for years and sometimes it’s a “give it a few days to shake out” situation and sometimes it’s a “Plex will need to manually fix it” situation. We can’t know which until a rep takes a look at it.
Look. I know how it works. You don’t need to try to educate me. Thanks for that though. What I’m suggesting is that a little patience with newly-released series is necessary.
I’ll get out of this now as I’m obviously out of touch with the needs of the anime community. My experience is that Plex catches up with 99% of metadata with no “community” involvement.
And thanks @BigWheel for liking that comment and making me look like an ass.
I think I’m going to just go away for a while again and forget these forums exist.
Look guys both of you are correct. Most things do get fixed in a few days. Sometimes we do need to manually fix things. You both said basically the same thing and not sure why there is even some argument about it.
We all want the info to be correct. We all want to to be correct as soon as possible. I don’t think anyone here is being impatient.
I was about to like one of yours as well but I got a live message i needed to respond to after happened to click that one since it was the one i last read.
It’s because I trivialized things, and I apologize. My disposition is “wait and see” while others’ is “let’s get in front.” Sorry if I seemed dismissive.
