Because both high broadband speeds and the use of security controls (VPN/Proxies etc) are becoming more common place, I find I’m using indirect connections more often than not these days. I’d like for remote streaming over indirect connections that pass through a Plex relay to increase in quality from 720p to 1080p if possible.
I don’t think there is an option for that in PMS. At least not that I have ever seen. Then again I am not sure why they degrade it at all. Seems unnecessary unless its some form of passive aggressive DRM thing etc.
Accessing a Server through Relay
Limitations
When relaying a connection through us, there are limitations for the streaming qualities you can use:
- Free users are limited to 1 Mbps maximum for streams
- Plex Pass subscribers are limited to 2 Mbps maximum for streams
If the content you’re trying to stream has a higher bitrate, then your Plex Media Server will need to transcode the content down to fit the limitation.
Cost. Plex has to pay for the servers and bandwidth to support Plex Relay.
So how do we bypass that for friends and family that have a real internet connection? 2 Mb is stupidly outdated. I have always assumed that Plex supported to 20MB since they ask what your upload speed is and you can specify that high in the upload speeds. Are you telling me that they are ignoring that?
It is low on purpose. So you are sparked to figure out what is wrong with your networking. Relay kicks in when a direct connection from player to your server fails.
Oh, so as long as my server has the green light on Remote access my friends are connecting to it directly and can get the full benefit of my upload speeds? I misunderstood Fordguy and thought it applied to traffic that was not relayed.
Also while I have your attention (hopefully) can you look at these topics? They are all basically the same problem but I think they have fallen through the cracks.
Thanks for your help.
