Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this forum. I bought a QNAP 233. This is also my first QNAP NAS. Before this, I always used Synology.
Now I’ve installed Plex from the App Store, played around with it a bit, and set it up. This is also my first time using Plex. When I tried to stream from the NAS Plex server, I got a message saying the version was out of date.
So I started doing some research. I understand that the version in the QNAP App Store, 1.30.0, is outdated. A simple update to the latest version isn’t possible anyway due to the risk of data loss. However, the intermediate versions aren’t available from either QNAP or Plex, and I haven’t been able to find them anywhere else on the (trustworthy) internet either.
So today I decided to completely uninstall Plex from the NAS again. Then I downloaded the latest version for my QNAP NAS and tried to install it manually. The system refused, saying, “Incorrect version.” I decided to try an alternative QNAP version on a whim, but of course that didn’t work either.
OK, so I installed the App Store NAS version and thought maybe I could install the latest version over it. But I got the same error message: “Wrong version.”
Now I’m at a loss: Updating via the QNAP Store isn’t possible, and manual installation isn’t possible either. Is Plex broken on QNAP? How do I get Plex working on my QNAP NAS?
I really don’t recall how I initially set it up, but I always have to manually install every time there’s an update. The web interface for the server is pretty good about letting me know when there’s an update.
Making sure you have the right version for your processor is likely a key component.
So far as I know, versions that appear in the store might always run a bit behind. I assume this has something to do with the way the packages are submit, and roll through a deployment process after QNAP receives them. I would also imagine that different languages add to the delay.
I know at one time that Plex was working with QNAP over licensing, which caused a significant delay in updates, but that has since been resolved. Again, I’d cite the language version of the store as potentially running further behind getting addressed as part of that theory.
Once you’re successfully installed, let the software tell you when you need to update. Best way to stay on top.
Basically what @AmazingRando24 said and to add to it, QNAP has their own QA process that they follow before the build is published on their store. We’ve been trying to improve this process so that NAS stores (not just QNAP) are following our releases a bit tighter. Definitely something we want to improve. Sorry for the frustration and confusion this has caused. Glad to hear you’re all setup again.
