Install on new QNAP TVS-h1288X

I have a brand new QNAP TVS-H1288X I want to install plex on. My current plex system is on a windows workstation. I’m not concerned with moving the database over since its kind of a mess. Is the package thats available in the QNAP app store the best to use or should it be manually installed? I want to make sure I get the hardware acceleration from the CPU as well.

Thanks

The version in the QNAP App Center is much older and does not fully support the h1288x.

I added support for ZFS / QuTS to the latest Plex packages. The App Center version does not have that support.

I also added support for GPU cards in QuTS.

Thanks so I downloaded the latest qpkg file from the plex.tv website. Is there a good tutorial someplace on how to install this and set this up on qnap?

There is but isn’t.

It’s very simple.

  1. App Center,
  2. Manual Install
  3. Give it the QPKG file you downloaded (64 bit) from plex
  4. Let it install
  5. When it finishes, you’ll see it in App Center
  6. Open it

Now, you will sign in with your Plex credentials. (Got IT – Creds)

Next you’ll start creating library sections

  1. Library Types = Movies / TV Shows / Music / etc
  2. The Wizard will want you to tell PMS which is the top of the section.
  3. Repeat until you’ve defined all you want.
  4. Done.

To give you an idea –

  1. I have a “Movies” shared folder containing all the primary movies
  2. I also have “Movies2” for the less often played.

In my Moves section, I add “/share/CACHDEDEV1_DATA/movies” and “/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/movies2”

Plex does the rest.

You might want to read up, starting here, for more info than I shared and on this for making sure your media is named.

Thanks well I almost got it. I got the package installed and then I signed in, but I don’t see any of the options to configure for the server, or the libraries or anything like that. It’s acting as if it is just a web player.

  1. What’s the IP address of the server?
  2. What’s the IP address of the computer you’re accessing it from?

Did you get the “Got It” button? Sounds like you didn’t .

(both must be on the same LAN subnet; you can’t use FQDN; you can’t use https://app.plex.tv during setup)

Note: LAN addresses must be RFC-1918 compliant (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x-172.31.x.x)

It was on a different VLAN/subnet. Once I moved to the same network it worked as expected and I’m good. Thank you. I have my media named and organized according to that article I did that a while ago, but I do have a question about the top level structure here is what my plan is.

  1. Create 1 shared folder on QNAP called “Plex Media”
  2. Create sub folders called “DVD” “Blue Ray” “TV Shows”
  3. I will have 2 Library’s “Movies” which will contain the DVD and Blue Ray Folders and "TV Shows which will have the TV show folder.

I know this will work, but is there any reason to create multiple shared folders in QNAP for my different categories instead of having them all live under the Plex Media main folder?

Depends on your style.

4K UHD rips are tough to share. I therefore tend to keep them separated and only play locally.

All others can be shared because they’re less than 40Mbps bandwidth usage
