Intel Quick Sync transcode quality issues on Intel 12th/13th gen CPUs

This will be a little bit (maybe a few days) before I can give it a full test on our new Lab system (We are building a new test/support system. The existing hardware , while still good, isn’t current enough )

I’ll check in with the builder (lab custodian) to see if he’s got it put together yet.
(it’ll be glorious though… complete with honking GPU card :sunglasses: )

Hey, no worries! I’m just happy to bring the issues with newer hardware to light, and I’m extremely happy to have someone actively looking into it.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Do me a favor?

  1. sudo bash
  2. cd /path/to/anime
  3. rm -rf .
  4. Pour more :beers:

What bothers me about Anime is the timing of and what they write in the subtitles versus what I’m able to understand natively. Some of them are so far out of sync in meaning, I have to back up and decide which makes most sense. I’m sure my German-biased ears don’t help much

I totally understand. In my case, ignorance is bliss.

YEP! That it does

@ChuckPa , did you all get that shiny new lab system up and running?

The hardware is built. It came online this morning (finished testing over the weekend)

Tonight I connect our “tank” (media server) and then give PMS a big run.

I’m looking forward to seeing what it can do.

Nice! Is this on 12th/13th gen intel? If so, I’m excited to have someone test quick-sync and finally prove I’m not just going crazy.

It’s 13th gen and has a Nvidia RTX-4030 in it.

When final config is complete, we’ll be able to test everything up through and including AV1.

As for you being crazy … Sorry, Beyond what I can test here .

HI @ChuckPa, just wanted to follow up on this. Hopefully if you can get your hands on a samsung TV and get the lab transcoding through QS, you should be able to replicate the quality issues with subtitles fairly easy.

@ChuckPa, I’m sure you’re busy. Following up on this again to make sure it doesn’t slip through the cracks.

Sorry for being so hideously late

  1. The lab machine, as a raw server, is running.

  2. I’m working on the custom scripting / tooling to make it easy for everyone in the company to use it (including the TV testing QA folks)

Here are a few quick grabs of recent work showing it in action.

We have a lot planned here. My priority now is help make it available for everyone who needs special testing.

PLease remember, I don’t have access to ANY samsung TVs.

Which would you like first ? Server or TV?

Glad to hear you got better hardware for testing! I expect the TV testing QA team should have access to test on Samsung devices once they are able to access this new system.

I’ll still check in on the thread to keep it from going inactive since this is a device-specific issue.
Any timeline on getting the internal teams set up with this new hardware?

I just built a new plex server with an i5-13600K and no dedicated GPU. I’m having similar issues. I built this specifically to take advantage of quicksync. I used to have a server with a 1050ti that worked much better.

When I transcode just a single movie in 1080p from say 30mbps to 10mbps it shows the GPU at 80 percent usage in the task manager.

@NLTurtle

Windows or Linux?

“Task Manager” sounds like Windows.

This is in windows 11 pro. With ONE transcode from 1080p 35mbs to 1080p 12mbs transcode.

After letting the transcode go for over a minute it will do the following GPU usage wise it bounces between 8 and 80 percent usage:

with the following settings:

@NLTurtle

You’re in the Linux forum.

Can’t help you here.

Suggest you create a new thread; Change the tag from server-linux to server-windows

Sorry, thanks!

Just updating this to make sure it doesn’t fall into the abyss.
